Title: What happened to the Intruder Watch?
Post by: k4kyv on May 05, 2009, 03:53:02 PM
I recall some years ago the League had a program called Intruder Watch, which took reports of unlicensed services intruding into the amateur bands.

I was thinking that this might be a starting point in trying to get some action at the diplomatic level on the 40m Ethiopian jamming station that wipes out 7160 every night.  Individual amateurs would report to the Intruder Watch, and the league, which would be be more knowledgeable about the proper chain of command than the individual amateur could be expected to be, would lodge a complaint that would eventually trickle its way up to the State Department, which would, in turn, file a complaint through the ITU.  Since the U.S. is presently reported to be giving some military assistance to Ethiopia, and there is a presence of Ethiopian troops in Somalia, a U.S. complaint through diplomatic channels might have some leverage on the Ethiopians.

At least that was the way I thought it was supposed to work.  I checked out the ARRL website and could find no reference whatever to the intruder watch, or any link for reporting suspected unlawful interference to the amateur bands.

Has this service been discontinued?

7160 khz is outside what the ARRL Monitoring System would cover, since it is not an exclusive band segment.

About all they could do would be to try to get some action through the State Department and it's very unlikely the Ethiopians would pay any attention.

Someone needs to convince them to QSY their cat-and-mouse jamming game down to somewhere between 7100 and 7125, since, because of our sub-band restrictions, it's wasted spectrum space anyway.
