Title: another idea for cleaning flotsam & jetsam from radios after repair work Post by: N3DRB The Derb on March 24, 2009, 04:20:05 AM Just on a whim, I tried one of my wifes forced air dog driers to blow out all little bits of cut wire, solder blobules, cleaner .....the crap that you need to get out of the radio before you apply power. I had used a air kompressor but it was a pain. it would always kick on and startle you in the middle of some operation scaring you to death.
these dog dryers have a gentle heater built in which you can select or turn off. basically a big azz cage blower wih a 10 ft hose. I like this solution far better than any other I've tried. Heres' a link. In the doggie trade they are called force dryers. Dri Eaz and Double K are the only ones worth buying. Thats good for blowing out loose debris, but what about removing accumulated grime from your equipment and bringing back the original luster ? What's a good word to describe the crud that accumulates in saved hardware like nuts, screws and bolts? Always, when I dump a box of hardware into my sorting tray, fish through it for the needed nut or bolt, and then pick up the remaining hardware and put it back into the hardware box, there is inevitably about a 1/4 cup of greyish powdery dust-like matter left in the sorting tray. What is this stuff and where does it come from? It always has the same physical characteristics and appearance no matter what kind of hardware I save.
