Title: Need Info On B & W Roller Inductor
Post by: K4TAX on January 12, 2009, 10:15:29 AM
I have two B & W # 3853 roller inductors.  That's the only number on the units.  They have 65 turns, coil length is 5.5" and diamerter is 1.875".  Overall they are  3.75"H x 3.25"W x 9.0"L.  The length includes the 1/4" shafts on each end.

On line calculators conclude the value is some 65 uH.

Research your old data books or catalogue and see if you can find any data.  A copy would be appreciated.  I tried B & W but they report "too old, no data".

Thanks

From an older B&W Catalog:  Model 3853 - inductance: 72 uH.   Will handle 750W CW, 1500W SSB.  Based on calculations, will handle 375W AM.

A matched pair would make a nice balanced/balanced tuner.
Check Rick Measures site.

Don't need a pair for a balanced tuner. One will do just fine. Save the extra bux for your antenna or rig.

Thanks to all that replied.  Based on info supplied these would make an ideal combination for a truly balanced antenna tuner.  Using a single variable cap as an L network and switching it between the input and output it should match any impecance between about 6 ohms and 6000 ohms, any band 160M - 10M and handle legal limit too.

I've the info from Rich Measures site.  And Small Parts of Miami has the proper pullys and serpinine belts to correctly link them mechanically.

Thanks.

Bob,

my memory is not very good , but I think you were the OM in TN that I picked up the W4DEK homebrew transmitter from were you not? I went to see Don K4KYV after that. Had a great time. You were running that blue cased BCL TX at the time. That HB W4DEK TX got taken over by KB3AHE. It's at his place so it's safe.

Yep, best I recall you did get the TX.  Since then I've gone through a couple of other BC rigs.  Get them, clean them, make them sound good and somebody comes along and wants them.

Hope all is going well with you.

Those inductors might go down to 600 meters. I have a pair of 22 uh in my tuner and wish they were 30 uh each.
Only two things to adjust in this configuration. You could also series tune it if necessary.
