Title: W2DU Hospitalized
Post by: W2INR on November 07, 2008, 05:55:02 AM
Rick sent this to me in regard to his dad,

Quote
Hello Gary,

I am in Saginaw Michigan with limited access to the internet.  My father, W2DU, entered the hospital here tuesday for routine surgery.  before the surgery was complete, he suffered loss of blood, and his heart stopped.  he was resuscitated, and received 8 units of blood.  He is still unconscious, and is in CCU inthe hosp in Saginaw.

Could you please post a topic to let the AM folks know of his condition?  I will keep you updated of status as he progresses.   Thank you very much.

You may contact me directly via cell at 404-729-1026 ifyou have any questions.  Phone is better for me than email right now.  message function on cell phone does not work but I can return calls if I miss your call.  Thanks

73, Rick W8KHK

My prayers are with you and your family Rick

I am happy to report that My dad, Walt Maxwell W2DU is much improved today.

Two days ago, kidney and bladder function were compromised, now they are much improved.  Ventilator assist has been reduced from 100% to 50%.  The pneumonia of two days ago is almost gone.  He was able to open his eyes and see us today, but still cannot talk.  Blood pressure and lung function are also recovering.  The outlook is now very good.  Thanks for all your prayers...

Rick, W8KHK

Thanks everyone for your prayers and good wishes.

Dad was removed from the ventilator, but is still being monitored in CCU.  As soon as they remove the arterial lines he will be moved out of CCU.  He is now able to talk, eat, and has a good sense of humor.  Wants to know "When can I get outta here?", so we know he will be well soon.

Will be in rehab for a while, then back on the air!

Thanks for the prayers and support!   Dad is now in a private room and all monitoring equipment is removed.  He has started physical therapy so that he can regain the strength needed to go home, then make the trip back to Florida for the winter.

Brief update - Dad has been discharged from the hospital in Saginaw.  He is now in a convalescent center in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, about two miles from his summer home.  He is still very weak and tired, but making slow progress with his therapy.

Thanks for all the prayers and well wishes, and Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Hello and Merry Christmas, Folks. Yes, I'm home, but still very wobbly.

I want to thank Rick for keeping you informed, and I also thank all the rest of you for your prayers and good wishes.

It's hard to believe that I was an SK for almost too many seconds, but the code-blue group performed CPR that restarted the pump. However, I don't remember seeing any blue skies or green pastures, or even any bright lights during those few seconds.

On the other hand, severe problems with Ambien sleep medication required four weeks in rehab that would have required only one week without the complication. If you use Ambien be careful not to use it for a long period, like a week, cuz it'll cause saturation and become useless. If you then increase the dosage it'll turn you into a zombie. Getting off from it was pure hell. In fact, I was in rehab getting over the drug problem as well as for physical strengthening.

Thank you all for your continued support. Jean and I will probably be ready to return home to DeLand, FL in the next two weeks. See 'ya then!

Walt, W2DU

Good Luck to You Walt........and we didn't know you were a hero of the space program. Your son shared some cool stories with us guy as kids were glued to the TV set.
My Dad had a lot of trouble with Ambien also.
