Title: Word of the Day...
Post by: Ed/KB1HYS on September 30, 2008, 10:42:42 PM
Retrotechnophile -- an individual who desires, values and appreciates (sometimes to extremes) older usually obsolecent technology such as mechanical calculators, slide rules, vacuum tubes, steam engines and other machinery or equipment of bygone days.

Certainly describes me, probably quiet a few others on here too!

I'm always fascinated by how our forefathers got things done, people seemed so much more clever in those "simpler times".

Good Word,

Imagine doing the Calculations for the Bearing Stress on those machines, Micing the Wear surfaces, Calculating the heat stress related tendencies of differing metals, By Hand.

I have quite a few Machining Businesses on my route Ed, and when i look at these New CNC Machines and what they turn out, man, What is Wrong with the Program ..?

Serfdom brings with it a haunting reminder.

Welp I'm a BIG Fan of Steam Traction Engines, we have a very big gathering here in W Pa. on Rt 40 Twice a year...and when you watch one of those behemoths rolling in off the Tractor Trailers Man..It's awe inspiring... Could you imagine setting the Roll tolerance on the drive wheels of a 4-8-8-4 Steam engine, By hand...Imagine Micing the OD of just one wheel...LOL..... ;D Real werk There....an Today they turn out these Parts like it's nothing...on those CNC's...Great Technology... :)

ah the great old machines. Back when the American craftsman ruled and useless bean counters knew their place.

Well Frank it does Try the Patience. I think what draws the talent here and on the air is what's sorely missing in the order of things, obviously...

The Time has come to pay the Bill OM, The Tab...however one wants to look at it...it is a good thing to face it and take a real hard look at "What's Left"...after the Decision...however it ends up...we're still Americans when it's all said an done.

But the whole world is watching.....is there anybody awake at home...
