It is obviously a hoax......

Was on YouTube, and got so many people worried, it made national news a few months ago......

They described in detail how the videos were made....

Funny thing that they claim the phones pop the corn when you CALL THOSE PHONES!!
Not if you call OUT on those phones......

So they pop the corn on RX, not TX!

surely it is a hoax. it would be a little more believeable if they were calling out on the phones neatr the popcorn, but on rx? something's not right here. if the can pop corn on rx with a cell phone, why can't it be done with any other kind of receiver. but you probably could pop corn with a tube rig if you lay the kernels next to a hot tube.

I'm surprised that it wasn't signed "Barbara 'Jiffy Pop' Mikkelson."  ;D

Considering microwave ovens use magnetrons to created 100's of watts, it's hard to believe a cell phone that produces a few 100 milliwatts, at most, could cook anything.

The company who made the video said "it would take more than 10million phones, in a very small space to do it....".

(It was a marketing ploy to sell "Blue-Tooth" headsets.)

Damn it Steve. You're like the kid in class that has all the answers and raises his hand everytime the teacher speaks.

Next time keep your hand down and let the rest of the class squirm for a while. ;D

yeah Buddly....

"They're a' watchin' you."

Remember the big TV scare years ago when the CRT was supposed to be seeing into your living room.
Johnny Carson said on one show....."Now we know what you are doing in front of late night TV."

I was at the age, I could only wish. ;D

Mine and my wife's phone do not transmit when just "powered on".

An incoming call only prompts a VERY short data burst...

Only when answered does is steadily transmit.

So I guess that short burst will cook corn better than a steady signal.....

When ever any cell phone is powered on, all it does is send an intial burst to the cell site to let it know it's alive, and ready.  It then sends out a "heartbeat" every few seconds.  This tells the cell site that it's alive and ready. Only when you actually make a call or answer one, does it go into transmit.  After the call ends it goes back to sleep with an occasional heartbeat.

the flying spot scanner theory using the remote control eye to receive the 'image'. plausible but not really practical. I recall a few worried customers coming into my TV shop and asking about it.

Yes they do. The will transmit at initial turn-on to register with the nearest tower/base station. And they will periodically "reregister" with the tower.

I put my cell phone in the chamber yesterday and watched it on the receiver. With 100db isolation to the world it lost service, of course, and sent out a seeker pulse every 5 seconds.

I opened the door to the anechoic chamber and moved the table closer to the door. After it regained service with 1 1/2 bar siganiganal it sent out a data pulse at 1.9 ghz every 10 seconds.

So yes, just sittin' there a cell phone does transmit.

lol, or you could just set it on your keyboard and listen to it ping the tower every so often. ::)

Does the smell of burning plastic corrupt the taste of the pop coune? Do you take the batts out before lighting them up?

Then there was the scare about x-rays being emitted from color televisions with to high an anode voltage and warning not to sit to close to the set.
