Title: QS1R VERB update Phil's board and GUI
Post by: W3RSW on June 16, 2008, 06:59:33 PM
The QS1R VERB -  SDR and GUI just keeps getting better and better.  As far as I know and mentioned on Mac, N4VGB's previous post, of those on the AMfone net, Bruce, KF1Z and I have these boards.   The darn thing has front end low pass filter and then "ADC's" the entire spectrum from DC to 50 Mhz at 125Mhz sampling rate into a FPGA which handles most of the softward interpretation and routing.  Takes most of the computer load off your local PC.  You can also use the local PC's sound card to run an auxiliary SSTV, DRM program, etc. concurrently.  -Everything on one 1Ghz or so computer, just about any ol' laptop these days.

Simply amazing and the GUI is stunning.  Check out the specs if you haven't already from previous post at:http://www.philcovington.com/QuickSilver/ (http://www.philcovington.com/QuickSilver/)

This thing is rapidly developing with band pass filters/pre amp/ amp /TR deck to follow.

Attached is a pix of latest,  matching GUI showing some expanded windows on left. Note the background of user's pix of choice; way cool.  The QS1R 's GUI uses a later version of windows than the Flex's (which shows in the 3D buttons, shadowing etc. )

Bandpass is also not limited to 192k soundcard chunks as in the Flex either.

Also I'm showing an earlier GUI version running EasyPal (tm) from my board.

Fantastic, huh Bruce?

Flex is a toy compared to Phil's RX. I'm sure flex will copy the idea for their next overpriced computer toy.

But they are all toys compared to the SOTA.

The ARRL Lab just published a product review (QST July 2008) on the Flex 5000
http://support.flex-radio.com/Downloads.aspx?id=224

And, from the Flex web site:
"The ARRL lab's measurements confirm that the FLEX-5000A achieves 99 dB two-tone, third order dynamic range and +39 dBm IP3 at @ 2 kHz spacing!  This is world class performance.  Worthy of note is that PowerSDR v1.12.0 already makes the article out of date before the ink has dried on the magazine.  Virtually every comment made about the radio in the article has already been addressed in the new release of PowerSDR, including automatic buffer settings by mode and screen resizing."

I really enjoy the use and flexibility of the Flex 5000 on both HF and VHF. Hardly ever turn on any of my other equipment anymore. Besides working great, you don't have to screw around with lots of external cables, clip leads, paper clips, twisted wire ends dangling in mid-air, etc. Internally mounted second receiver is also now available, and a 2M/70 cm transverter, also mounted internally, will be available later this year.
