Title: 8005's as modulators Post by: WZ1M on April 21, 2008, 06:54:05 AM OK, whats the opinion of using 8005's as modulators. I have a pair of these and thiking about driving the 8005's with a pair of 6l6G's. Any coments and thoughts would be well received.

8005s are nice triodes, but made of unobtanium. It took me 2 years to find a spare pair for a transmitter that I have. If you are looking for something in that power range I'd consider 811As instead, since they are a lot easier to come by than 8005s and 811As will wirk fine with 0 bias where 8005s wont. I found a pair on the web for almost $200. Lucky the problem was a dirty contact in the tube socket but one tube has run very hot so its days are numbered. I would use something easier to find.

I did have one more spare, but I let one slip out of my hands and dropped it about 1 foot onto a carpeted rug and opened up the filament. >:(
