Title: 420-490KHz PTO
Post by: Tom W2ILA on January 28, 2008, 12:12:41 PM
I have a PTO thats a Collins 70-E knockoff and it tunes 420-490.  Anyone have any ideas for a project for this thing?  BFO?

(1) A super stable BFO for receivers with i.f.'s in the 455 kc range.  I know some receivers have 470 kc i.f.'s and I have heard of 465 as well.  455 is smack in the middle of the range of that PTO.

(2) Heterodyne it with a xtal oscillator somewhere in the 2 mc range, to make a stable VFO or homebrew slopbucket rig to cover the 70 kc segment of 160m of your choice.

(3) Use the 2nd harmonic to run a pirate broadcast transmitter in the 840-980 kc  range.

(4) Use the 4th harmonic as a VFO to cover 1800-1960 on 160m.

THat's probably just the PTO coil from a R-390.  I don't recall a complete PTO (including the tube and associated circuitry) for that range.

Yep, a BFO is the likely project for such an animal.

Yep. its a complete PTO in a can with the usual tube socket and 4-pin plug.  I'll hook it up and fool a bit with it as BFO then maybe find a project for it.

I have one from a 60's vintage frequency synthesiser, perhaps the same one.  There was also another PTO that covered somewhere in the AM broadcast band.  But IIRC, neither of them fall completely within a ham band.
