Title: A Newsletter Called "The Oscillator" 1921, Any Leads? ARS 8UP
Post by: AB3L on January 22, 2008, 09:03:34 PM
I became the owner of a Spark QSL card from Pittsburgh. Call was 8UP to station 3QW. 8UP is pushing a newsletter or something called "The Oscillator", 1 yr for $1.00, 3 month trial for $.25........

Does anyone have a callbook to get his name or has anyone heard of the publication?

I did a search for the 8UP call but got a listing for a 1928 station operator named Chenoweth. My guy's last name is Weir but can't make out the first name.

Thanks,

Bob

Sounds cool Bob, those old amateur pubs were very interesting indeed!

I've included a scan of a couple I have below.

How about a high resolution scan of the card?

What was the year of the QSO, you mention 1928, but that seems late for King Spark.
If I know, I can check some old call books.

The card was dated 1921. Location: Squirrel Hill Sta. ( I take it as "Station"). Maybe they just referenced the closest Post office for the addresses back then..........

Bob, in the 1926 call book  station 8UP is listed as
Merril Charles Kent,   Monessen, PA

Station 3QW is listed as Linwood G. Lessig,  Pottstown PA

Just realized way back when, 8 land was pa :)

This is getting confusing.........three guys with the same call within seven years.

Thanks for the lookup.

Thanks to Rod Dinkins, AC6V, I have a correct name. It was James W. Weir from the 1921 Callbook. I got a scan of a page and it shows a listing for Henry Ford 8XD, Westinghouse Electric 8XK, and Carnegie Institute of Technology (CMU) 8XN among others.
