Title: About my EF Johnson Blackface Messenger Two
Post by: W5EFR on May 30, 2007, 10:00:33 PM

Thanks to some outstanding suggestions from some other AM'ers, my Blackface Johnson Messenger 2 now sounds damn good.

So I did a little recording and Analysis...The Before and After, if you will..

The Audio, recorded straight off an RF Sampler between the transmitter and the dummy load:

Bone Stock:

Modded:

The Audio Analysis:

Red line is the bone stock Radio
Blue line is 2 caps swapped (C24, C35)
Green line is 3 caps swapped (C24, C31, C35)

The Mods:

C24, C31, C35
Stock Values: .005 uF
Modification Values: 0.22 uF

Jumper R48 to increase power output to 8-10 watts carrier

Can you dig it?

Now I just need some Power behind this thing...

Whoa that sounds GOOD now!  Ha ha, the original sounded so bad that my browser crashed every time I listened to it.  But not the modded version!

Thanks for the reply Bacon.

At least you posted after listening.

It was a fun project and I am really pleased with the outcome. It is amazing how much of a difference 3 caps (and a small rack of audio processing) make.

Now I need to add some power and I'm ready for 10 meters.... I'm going to try and find another Messenger to play with...

Bow, what mic did you use in the second (improved) recording?

Wow! Huge difference in the audio. Nice job. That voodoo woodo that you do is bad to the bone.
