Title: Car Tunes
Post by: W1RKW on February 08, 2007, 04:53:04 PM
What do think is one of the best car related rock tunes made?  A tune that gets you pumped.

Here's just one.  Lately can't seem to get enough of Highway Star by Deep Purple

Yes, definately "Highway Star" by Deep Purple. That's my first choice for road trips.

Another great one is "Born to Be Wild" by Steppenwolf.

AC/DC - Highway To Hell
Meatloaf - Bat Out Of Hell
Primus - Jerry Was A Race Car Driver
Charlie Daniels - Hot Rod Lincoln

I also listen to Techno-Trance music allot while driving. I find that it helps with my focus on driving and less on the idiots I have to share the road with. Because it keeps my Road Rage level down when said idiots cut me off or otherwise drive stupid.

Roadrunner The Modern Lovers

One two three four five six
Roadrunner, roadrunner
Going faster miles an hour
Gonna drive past the Stop 'n' Shop
With the radio on

I'm in love with Massachusetts
And the neon when it's cold outside
And the highway when it's late at night
Got the radio on
I'm like the roadrunner

Alright
I'm in love with modern moonlight
128 when it's dark outside
I'm in love with Massachusetts
I'm in love with the radio on
It helps me from being alone late at night
It helps me from being lonely late at night
I don't feel so bad now in the car
Don't feel so alone, got the radio on
Like the roadrunner
That's right

Said welcome to the spirit of 1956
Patient in the bushes next to '57
The highway is your girlfriend as you go by quick
Suburban trees, suburban speed
And it smells like heaven(thunder)
And I say roadrunner once
Roadrunner twice
I'm in love with rock & roll and I'll be out all night
Roadrunner
That's right

Well now
Roadrunner, roadrunner
Going faster miles an hour
Gonna drive to the Stop 'n' Shop
With the radio on at night
And me in love with modern moonlight
Me in love with modern rock & roll
Modern girls and modern rock & roll
Don't feel so alone, got the radio on
Like the roadrunner
O.K., now you sing Modern Lovers

(Radio On!)
I got the AM
(Radio On!)
Got the car, got the AM
(Radio On!)
Got the AM sound, got the
(Radio On!)
Got the rockin' modern neon sound
(Radio On!)
I got the car from Massachusetts, got the
(Radio On!)
I got the power of Massachusetts when it's late at night
(Radio On!)
I got the modern sounds of modern Massachusetts
I've got the world, got the turnpike, got the
I've got the, got the power of the AM
Got the, late at night, (?), rock & roll late at night
The factories and the auto signs got the power of modern sounds
Alright

Right, bye bye!

Factoid:  The Original Hot Rod Lincoln was written and sung by Charlie Ryan in 1955.  He is also the guy that built the Hot Rod Lincoln.. It is a Model A Ford body on a shortened Lincoln Zephyr frame.  A Flathead V8 Lincoln fills up the engine compartment.. In the song, the grapevine hill he refers to is the Old switchback grade that comes up out of Lewiston Idaho.  There is a new road down into Lewiston since the 80's but the old grade is still open and every once in a while I drive it just for fun..The original Hot Rod Lincoln was on display at the Museum of Arts and Culture (MAC) in Spokane, WA last winter.  It isn't a show car but it was cool to see..They still drive it.  Cool song too.

Ya know John, I thought so too but the web tells another story.

HOT ROD LINCOLN
(Charlie Ryan / W.S. Stevenson)

Commander Cody & The Lost Planet Airmen - 1972

Also recorded by: All; Asleep at the Wheel; Johnny Bond;
Blanche McCrary Boyd; Les Claypool; Larry Groce; Hit Crew;
Hot Rod Lincoln; Bill Kirchen; Kenny Price; Razorbacks;
Rollin' in the Hay; Charlie Ryan; Pat Travers; The Twangbangers.

My pappy said "Son, you're gonna drive me to drinkin',
if you don't stop drivin' that Hot Rod Lincoln."

Have you heard the story of the hot rod race,
where the Fords 'n' Lincolns was settin' the pace?
That story is true, I'm here to say,
that I was drivin' that Model-A.

It's got a Lincoln motor and it's really souped up,
that Model-A body makes it look like a pup.
It's got eight cylinders and uses 'em all,
got overdrive, just won't stall.With a four-barrel carb and a dual exhaust,
with 4-11 gears you can really get lost.
Got safety tubes but I ain't scared,
the brakes are good, tires fair.

From the history of "Hot Rod Lincoln" page http://www.rockabillyhall.com/HotRodLncln1.html

Quote
HOT ROD LINCOLN by Charlie Ryan & The Timberline Riders
written by Charlie Ryan & W.S. Stevenson
4 Star 1733, 1959
Billboard review date: 26-Oct-59
Chart position: #14 Country, #33 Pop

Although Jim Dawson & Steve Propes wrote in 1992 that Johnny Bond had
recorded "Hot Rod Lincoln" prior to Charlie Ryan's version, I find that
the Ryan recording was reviewed on 26-Oct-59, while Bond's wasn't reviewed
until 20-Jun-60, a full eight months later.  Ryan's version debuted on
the charts on 09-May-60, while Bond didn't hit until 08-Aug-60, so it is
apparent that Ryan started the revival.  Dawson & Propes also mentioned
that Bond's version charted C&W, which I have not been able to confirm.

HOT ROD LINCOLN, as written by Charlie Ryan & W.S. Stevenson:

     Well you've heard the story of the hot-rod race that fatal day,
     when the Ford and the Mercury went out to play.
     This is the inside story I'm here to say,
     I was the kid that was a-drivin' that Model-A.

     It's got a Lincoln motor and it's really souped up,
     and that Model-A body makes it look like a pup.
     It's got twelve cylinders, and uses them all,
     with an overdrive that just won't stall.

I've heard this song MANY times and can vouch for the "twelve cylinders" line.

Quote
HOT ROD LINCOLN by Charlie Ryan & The Livingston Brothers
written by Charlie Ryan
Souvenir 101, 1955
Billboard review date: Not reviewed
Chart position: Did not chart

The most enduring of the answer records was "Hot Rod Lincoln" by
Charlie Ryan & The Timberline Riders, which first saw open road in
1955, attributed to Charlie Ryan & The Livingston Brothers on Ryan's
own Souviner Records.  Ryan later told Pat Ganahl, editor of Rod and
Custom magazine, that he and Shibley wrote their respective songs at
about the same time in 1950, when they were both touring in the same
area.  Ryan, who owned a real hot rod Lincoln with twelve cylinders,
begins his road race in Lewiston, Idaho, going through to the top of
the hill (where Chuck Berry would later catch Maybellene in her Coupe
de Ville).

Hot Rod Lincoln - Song Lyrics
My pappy said, 'Son, you're gonna drive me t' drinkin' ...
If you don't quit drivin' that - Hot ... Rod ... Lincoln!'

Well, you've heard the story of the hot rod race,
When the Ford and the Mercury were settin' the pace.
That story's true I'm here to say,
Cause I was a'drivin' that Model A.

It's got a Lincoln motor and it's really souped up;
That Model A body makes it look like a pup.
It's got 12 cylinders and uses them all;
And an overdrive that just won't stall.

It's got a 4-barrel carb and dual exhausts,
4:11 gears that really get lost -
Safety tubes and I'm not scared,
The brakes are good and the tires are fair.

We left San Pedro late one night;
The moon and the stars were shinin' bright.
We were drivin' up Grapevine Hill,
Passin' cars like they were standin' still.

Then, all of a sudden, in the wink of an eye,
a Cadillac sedan passed us by.
The remark was made, "That's the car for me."
But, by then, the taillights wuz all you could see.

Well, the fellers ribbed me for bein' behind,
So I started to make that Lincoln unwind.
Took my foot off the gas and, man alive,
I shoved it down into overdrive.

Well, I wound it up to 110;
Twisted the speedometer cable right off the end.
Had my foot glued right to the floor;
I said, "That's all there is - there ain't no more."

Now the fellas thought I'd lost all sense;
The telephone poles looked like a picket fence.
They said, "Slow down, I see spots."
The lines on the road just looked like dots.

Went around a corner and passed a truck;
I crossed my fingers just for luck -
The fenders clickin' the guard rail post;
The guy beside me was white as a ghost.

Smoke was rollin' outta the back
When I started to gain on that Cadillac
I knew I could catch him and hoped I could pass
But when I did I'd be short on gas.

There were flames comin' from out of the side;
You could feel the tension; man, what a ride.
I said, "Look out, boys, I've got a license to fly"
And the Cadillac pulled over and let me by.

All of a sudden a rod started knockin';
Down in the depths she started a rockin'.
I looked in the mirror and a red light was blinkin';
The cops was after my Hot Rod Lincoln.

Well they arrested me and put me in jail.
I called my pop to make my bail.
He said, "Son, you're gonna drive me t' drinkin',
If you don't quit drivin' that - Hot ... Rod ... Lincoln!"

Car songs and hot rods will always be close to my heart.

For modern car songs, I'll have to go with Sammy Hagar (I cant drive 55)

But for classics Mabelline is one of my all time favorites!!

"the heat went down, the motor cooled down, and thats when I heard that highway sound. Cadillac sittin like a ton o lead 110 a half a mile ahead"!!.......................................

Here is one for you car and old music buffs: Think about the song "Shut Down". What is very untypical about this one??

The all time best driving music is open headers on a cold night with a good rich mixture.
The sound of I called header chink as you hear each exhaust valve shoot out a little fire.
I liked it best at mild load on the motor say a little hill and you give it just enough gas to open the power valve. I could only handle about a 1/2 hour of it before the brain started to buzz.

you just don't get that sound with a baby fart muffler on a rice burner...

Hot Rod Lincoln:

I like the version recorded by Bill Kirchen who I believe played guitar on the Commander Cody version.  He adds in a whole part where different musicians are passing him, folks like Jimi, Stevie, Albert King, Benny King, The King, The Boss and procedes to nail little snippits from their muisc as each one passes.  The strangest part is when he somehow fits the Sex Pistols in the middle of the song.  Good stuff,  a fellow ham turned me on to that one.  Ed

Oh I love the sound of open headers. Unfortunately they're frowned upon here in the burbs.. Yet for some reason the 'baby fart' mufflers seem to be exempt. Kids of yesteryear drove around in loud cars that took off like a rocket, kids today only make a lot of racket and can't outrun a push lawnmower!

Nothing like lying in bed and being rudely awakened by a pack of angry bees buzzing by your house. I'd prefer to be awakened by something that actually sounds like a racecar!

I think it takes a 427 to beat a 413. 409 no chance. Mouse motor, yea maybe with a blower on top.
I think in its day the only thing that would take a 413 was the 392, maybe the Ford 427 y block.

Nuthin better than listening to the car radio in my hotrod '53 Chevy (around 1962-64) with a wild "stove bolt" Chevy 6 with a milled head, oversized valves, 3/4 cam and a 4 barrel with a home made ram intake manifold and split exhaust headers.  More HP than one would think possible from such a conglomeration!  What fun it was to go huntin' for Ford Flat Heads... to do war.   Several buddies...a car load....cruzin around town.....gas was about 30 cents or maybe less per gallon. Drove around all night with everyone chipping in a buck apiece. Listening to great AM stations like WLS, WOWO, CKLW, etc etc.  Great tunes like 409, Little Duece Coupe, Little Old Lady from Pasadena.  And...all those neat old DO WOPP songs.  And... those great US 30 Dragstrip Commercials:  "SUNDAY, SUNDAY...SUNDAY!!!! See those drag cars roar down the strip at THE US 30 Dragstrip.  FUN, Noise, and raw power!!! SUNDAY...SUNDAY...SUNDAY.  Only $5.00 Admission."

Ah yes, I'm showing my age...those were great times!
