Title: New 813 rig
Post by: WA3VJB on January 17, 2007, 09:07:19 PM
Here are a couple of photos John took of the new KC2FXE  transmitter he's been building and now has on the air.  I worked him on it the first time this past weekend.

To complete the christening, you have to give her a name...
     Really nice job. Congrats!

Reminds me of a 250 watt BC rig built in the 50s by RCA.  Beautiful job, John.  And yes, it certainly does sound good too, as I have worked it a couple times.  Big time better than "KC2FXE in the mobiiiilllle."  Congrats!

GREAT job John,--looks real professional, and have heard it on 75 and it sounds
as good as it looks.
If my homebrew 813 linear comes out half as good,--I will be happy.

Looks like a real FB rig!

As I've said for many years; "Real transmitters are homebrewed with a socket wrench, and you have to stand to tune them!" Looks like you've built this one in accordance with this W2XR design standard!

Enjoy the new rig. Nothing, and I mean nothing compares with the thrill of making QSOs with a transmitter you designed and built yourself, scrounged and horsetraded for the parts, and where you know the history and feel of every single part in that rig. I think it's great that you are preserving the almost lost art of building your own radio gear; this is in keeping with the classic tradition of amateur radio and is one of it's most basic tenets.

I hope to work your homebrew transmitter with my homebrew transmitter in the not too distant future.

Good luck with her! BTW, my rig is named "old Betsy". I agree with the previous post; all big AM transmitters should be named after women!

73,

Bruce

John,
What a FBOM looking and sounding rig. I too agree, that it's the best sounding rig I've ever heard you on, and man, it STRAPS here in SE Penisylvania!

It was a long time coming, and well worth the wait John. You really perservered with it. I'm looking forward to have many more QSO's with you on the big rig.

BTW, the 813 viewing window is "the bees knees"!

To complete the christening, you have to give her a name...
     Really nice job. Congrats!

That's right, all temperamental things need a female name.

For Hiram it was "Old Betsy".
With those large protruding tubes, reminiscent of certain cone shaped armor worn by Viking females, may I suggest "Helga"?

John you were most strappescent on the Sunday AWA Net, the loudest I have heard you up here in Maine!
Congrats on your new baby, she looks great!
