Man, you guys need to get some better test equipment.
Take a softrock 6 and set it up for the IF of your RX and see a real display. ($14 kit)
that is not much better than a magic eye.

$14 kit + $300-500 computer + cost of the receiver. Not really that cheap. But it will give a better display than the old panadaptor. Still, nothing is more cool than a magic eye.

SP600 will work fine as a front end. And if you are here you have a pakuter.
So all it takes is the massive $14 investment and a few hours snorting flux

Steve uses one of those 'other' puters tho.. hehe I don't see any software that has 'evolved' to work with that 'other' computer.

Steve, how far are you from Blowie? I'll give you a computer w/USB that you can run at least Weirdos 2K on. There's also a source package there for the software so it may even be compilable on Linux, I'll have a look see at home.

In any event 'if' it's just straight 'C' it probably can. In which case it may be easily ported to Darwin. If it can be ported to Darwin I'll see if I can get a copy running on my G3 OSX.3.9.. No promises but I'll try, I know a little C but I'm no pro!

It looks like it's written in Visual Basic or Visual C. Also has too many Windows dependencies so chances of it working on a Mac are next to nil. Flex-Radio required to use the SoftRock does not provide the source. Not to mention the damn thing needs MS .Net Framework.

I don't care for the SDR1K software because it takes about 60 meg of billware for it to function. I prefer I2PHD software. download and run.

True, but I'm already running an SDR-1000.

The point was not so much the software but the screen quality difference between an old panadapter screen and some of the new stuff on the market.

If it was all about the latest and greatest, none of us would have a radio more than a year old.

Randy: supposedly Flex is working on a Linux version of there software. I would think that would be the one to port to Darwin/OSX. I would imagine it could be run under X11 on OSX too.

Gonna spring for a cheapie XP machine. Which brings me back to my original point about cost. Doesn't matter if you already have a computer or not. It's still money spent to make the system work. Fourteen dollars is a fantasy.

I have a 1GHz machine in the shack with 500 meg of ram. I think I paid $200 for it.
Stock Dell sound card works fine. also have a machine for doing switcher cad right near by. No kids games of internet crap. No fear of outside worms or diseases.

Good move. No internet means almost zero security problems. I don't have a computer in the radio room. I did have in in years past that served as a digital version of a cart machine. Will need to get one in there soon to play with the SDR stuff.

$20 and a handfull of computer parts...  ;D

I am really enjoying the flex radio, great receiver.

Do they still make that softrock kit?

Yes they are up to softrock 6 and 7. I built a 6 and have a 7.
I like the 6 design better.  Very nice stuff. I suggest you check each resistor value because the colors are hard to see even under a microscope. red and org very close. I made my own BB transformer because not crazy about Tony's design but it does work. fc
