Told my instructor my battery died the weekend before, he made sure we where out of class early enough for me to get the rest of the museum. Found out when I was there yesterday that Dayton Fly In started today. Sheeeeeeeeeiiiittt! Anyway, I'm not sure how many pictures I got. Probably close to 1300 or so, along with some videos. I tried to get every plane as well as every sign to explain what was what. Of course, you can tell my interests, the Blackbirds (a family member worked on them) and the Valkyrie. Amazing planes. Enjoy. Hopefully this can bring someone as much joy as I got finally getting to see the place in person. If youre a plane buff and get the chance, go. --Shane WP2ASS / ex KD6VXI Title: Re: US Air Force Museum Trip Post by: KA3EKH on June 30, 2025, 02:19:24 PM Maybe the best free museum in the world, right up there with the Smithsonian. Always try to build time into Hamvention trip to get there but have not been in the last several years. was there when they opened the space gallery. Most people get all worked up on the space shuttle and all that stuff but the big thing for me is now that everything that was involved with the Agena is no longer classifieds they have a Gambit KH-7 on display along with the C-119J aircraft that was used to capture the film capsule as it returned to earth.
https://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/Visit/Museum-Exhibits/Fact-Sheets/Display/Article/197556/fairchild-c-119j-flying-boxcar/ scroll thru all the pictures and you will see the radio position on board and the ART-13 and BC-348 that were used for communications along with the VHF receiver and DF system that was used to track the capsule on reentry. They would fly a wing of planes each located just after the other along the reentry path in case the capsule over or undershoots its predicted reentry. From KH-1 to KH-9 over twenty years and over thirty flights only a couple capsules were lost. quite a program that only became public after the NRO was declassified. Such a great trip. I'm in Puerto Rico now with my wife. I just found out in Old San Juan there is a Museum of Radio Broadcasting. Hoping to hit it before we go home. --Shane WP2ASS / ex KD6VXI Title: Re: US Air Force Museum Trip Post by: KD6VXI on July 03, 2025, 11:29:31 AM Couple other screenshot of the plane, etc. AMfone - Dedicated to Amplitude Modulation on the Amateur Radio Bands
