Hi again,

Today is my last day of my working career. Between a pension and SS, it just makes sense. I've been working continously since I have been 14, and I think that I can in good conscience cease in daily employment. That said, now I have time for my interests as well as all of the honey dos.

Tomorrow I am starting the restoration of my newly acquired RCA oscillator. From Inital inspection, besides being filthy, some nincompoop stuffed a JAN1624 tube in it rather than the correct civilian  807. Though both tubes have similar curves, the 807 uses standard 6.3 vac filament voltage, whereas the JAN tube is 2.something vac. I guess that they wanted a space heater rather than an oscillator. The JAN tube also has no cathode.

My question is this.. is it OK for me to post an ongoing update with photos on this forum? I don't want to tick anyone off.

Congrats on your last day.

The 1624 requires 5 Watts of filament power whereas the 807 requires 5.7 Watts of filament power.

My theory? The original power transformer failed and the 1624 was subbed because the new transformer he used had a 2.5 volt winding.

What's the model number of this RCA oscillator?

Congratulations. I'm sure that you've more than earned your free time in retirement. Enjoy.

On the retirement aspect I congratulate you, and now you will wonder why you didn't do this sooner. You will also become so busy doing other things that you will scratch your bohunkous wondering how you got anything done! ;)

Let me also offer my congratulations on your transition to retired life.

I have been retired for almost 20 years, and I must say that "Retirement" is the best job I ever had.

For years I often thought that when I retired, I would have plenty of time do all the things I planned to do for so many years.   But it 'taint so.  I spend a great deal of time volunteering, more than I spend on projects for myself.   But it is very pleasurable and rewarding.  In my opinion, "Giving Back" is underrated, and more folks should try it.

It is nice being my own boss, but if a retired person ever ends up in heated disagreements with his or her new boss, sometimes causing insomnia, it is time to promptly seek professional therapy!

I joined the retirement club back in November.  I have enjoyed every minute of it.

Congrats, Joe! Well deserved.

I've been 'retired' for 18 years now, was lucky to do it at 54.

One thing I've come to realize is I'm busier than before, and sometimes I find myself thinking about getting a job again so I'll have more free time...

My uncle retired multiple times.

Forst time was in his late 30s.

By 42 he bought another house and was remodelling it.

When teenager me asked wtf are you doing,  his response was, 'I can only go to Tahoe so many times before it gets boring".

He retired 5 times before it stuck.
