Title: 75a4 restored by person other than Mills Post by: W1HHT on July 01, 2024, 07:47:22 AM Question for the board:
Mostly an exploratory post, I have a Collins 75a4 that I recently acquired and it was reported to have been fully restored by a K4NPY Jim Taylor, who is now sk and was a Collins service technician back in the day. I am told his restorations were as good as Mills. It is in collector condition and has two filters. Has anyone heard of this gentleman or own any of his restored units? Title: Re: 75a4 restored by person other than Mills Post by: Pete, WA2CWA on July 01, 2024, 09:55:49 PM As an FYI, there is no record of a K4NPY in the 1970, 1980, 1990, and 1997 call books. Also, doing an FCC license search for K4NPY which starts from the current date and back, I believe to the late 80's or early 90's, there is no record of the call K4NPY.
Other Sources In the amateur radio arena I found: James Taylor, N4TGP Naples, FL Born 6/16/1920 License expired 1988 Today age 104 I found: Jim Taylor, N4LQB Pelham, AL Born 5/16/1969 Active Today age 55 ed: you can't hide from the ManualMan ;D Title: Re: 75a4 restored by person other than Mills Post by: W1HHT on July 01, 2024, 10:38:21 PM Wow, great investigative work there Pete!

Title: Re: 75a4 restored by person other than Mills Post by: wb1ead on July 02, 2024, 09:20:29 AM Hi "HHT"..cud not locate ur name so anyhoo..back over 10years ago I was offered a 75A2 that someone crafted into an A2A..I thought or assumed it might be Howard..expert re-working both exterior & interior including new dial markings and the addition of extra filters..sent a letter and 35mm photo to Howard and no reply..I'm fairly positive it was not a factory conversion which was offered at one time by Collins..so I always wondered about that one.."who did it ?"..anyway the following year I think 2012 I let it go at Nearfest..never heard from the young op who bought it..just sayin' it cudda been the same dude..??
Hope you do find the "restorer"..gud luk !! 73 de DAVE WB1EAD Title: Re: 75a4 restored by person other than Mills Post by: W1HHT on July 02, 2024, 11:04:29 AM I'm told by the seller that he cannot remember other than the fact the name was James Taylor and he was from Augusta Georgia, and that he was a Collins Tech.
I will have to search for a James Taylor in Augusta in the call books whenever I have the chance. Thank you, David King W1HHT Title: Re: 75a4 restored by person other than Mills Post by: Pete, WA2CWA on July 02, 2024, 02:40:40 PM Info from much older times not be included especially if person is already SK.

Once again, Meeting Room 7 was packed to the limit, with standing room only at the rear for latecomers. The room was more comfortable this year, thanks to the two ceiling fans installed since last year's Forum. This year's Forum started with an unusual announcement by K8AFP. He stated that he was to leave soon for an extended tour of overseas military duty, and he was looking for a trustworthy ham to use his Globe King 500C and give it TLC while he is out of the country! The program started with a slide show presented by Dale, KW1I, featuring the elaborate station of Sam, W6HDU, which consists of several separate operating positions with an array of vintage equipment, including a couple of broadcast transmitters. Slides also featured the stations of Andy, WA4KCY, and Jim, W4PNM. The second part of the program was a panel discussion, led by Don, K4KYV, editor and publisher of The AM Press/Exchange. Panelists included Pete, WA2CWA, John, WB5HRI, Jim, W4PNM, and Skip, W7YOO, representing the AM community over a wide geographical area. A number of topics were discussed, particularly the problem of interference between AM groups operating near the same frequency in different parts of the country, and the pros and cons of all stations in an AM QSO zero-beating the same frequency (to minimize spectrum occupied by the QSO vs. the inconvenience this would cause to stations operating crystal control). A brief question and answer session with the audience followed the prepared discussion. Time ran out before members of the audience had a chance to get together for individual conversations, so a dozen or so of those present joined Don and Dale that evening for the traditional pizza dinner at a local restaurant, where the small group discussions were able to continue. Once again, the AM Forum at Dayton was an unqualified success, one of the high points of the hamfest. Already, many of those present have mentioned looking forward to next year." It's interesting to review the July 1996 mailing list and see how many calls you recognize ;D 1996 - it think we were many still attending FARFEST in September. Those early Sunday mornings were always rough ;D |
