Title: Absolutely Unbelievable !!
Post by: steve_qix on April 05, 2015, 11:24:12 PM
Would anyone here pay $600 for THIS???? Would you pay 6$?  60 cents?  They pay you $20 to take it away? Wow!

This is an ebay item: http://www.ebay.com/itm/231507952896 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/231507952896)

How about free and they pay the shipping?

That seller overprices all his offerings.  On the other hand, he DOES have a button for 'Make an offer".

Looks like a real classic to me. Perhaps not 600 but 200 to 300 would be reasonable. But I suppose it doesn't look as nice as your SDRs on the screen. I doubt there are too many of them around. I like the old stuff myself. And use it.

That guy is a radio-moron.  Always is in his listings' values. ::)

How many like that do you want?  Ask me, I'll make you a better deal..... ;)

As someone mentioned, he does have a button for Make Offer. I looked at his past sales and he has MANY times accepted the offer. Too bad it doesn't show what the offer was.

I guess it is just his strategy for getting what he can without revealing the prices, plus rarely reeling in someone ignorant of value and worth.

I thought the prices were revealed in the 'sold listings' search on the site.

The interstage transformer is interesting: triode 6F6 to PP 6F6s. Brought up because that really looks like a parts set to me.

Yes, auction prices are shown on regular auctions and Buy it Now sales, but aren't shown on Offers.

Too bad it doesn't show what the offer was.

Doesn't matter. It sold, so that means both parties were okay with the price. The only time price should matter to any of us is when we're the ones who have to pay it.

I suspect this isn't the first time someone has priced an ebay or hamfest item well above what many of us would consider reasonable or accurate. Bet it will happen again, too. Brace yourselves, price police.... ;)

Being one of the first 5 or 6 in production,  I'd believe the chassis would command a premium.

Even if you transplanted a working unit into it.   Would be really cool to have serial number 5 sp600.....

Maybe not 700 dollars worth of cool,  but.....

Whatever someone wants to pay is fine, its not my money.
I would not pay much for any of that old stuff, and would not pay at all for most of it.
A 51S1 is a very poor receiver yet they sell for big bucks, same for the 75a4.
I can not think of anything old that works really well and would be worth a lot of money....
Same with cars, why anyone would pay a lot of money for an old car is beyond me, they were quite poor by todays standards.

Precisely why my SK friend's '31 Caddy V-16 only went for $350K.

As far as that Hammy being very early, at least the cover is S/N #5.  A photo of the chassis rear apron would establish provenance.  I say thay because the PSU S/N is nowhere near close to matching, they are usually within 100 numbers.

I guess it is worth what ever some one will pay. EPAY is a good place to find parts but that is all, for selling it is great for the seller, largest market there is probably.

I see guys place stuff on the local Craig's List for outrageous prices and comments like "I think it is"... (fill in blanks) or "I think it works", "worked 20 years ago when I last tried it".  And then they just keep re listing I guess  in the hope some one will bite.

Lots of old things work well and are worth tons of money. Some of the best sounding, most highly sought after and most expensive guitars are old ones. There's a 1940 Martin D-28 on sale at Steve Swan Guitars for a mere $85,000.

http://www.steveswanguitars.com/items/vintage-martin-dreadnought/1940-martin-d-28/

And there is a 58 Les Paul on sale at Gruhns in Nashville for only $175,000.

Similar models or others from the same eras have gone for more. They represent the holy grail in their respective guitar genres.

Sometimes, older is better, just like Port.

Steve,

Fwiw, I bought something from these guys. It's several guys with a mill building room with a bunch of "stuff". They have a website. If I were near you, being nearer to them, I'd likely go for a look-see myself.

They resell stuff that they buy from estates, afaik.

The National 101A type receiver I bought from them was ok for the price. The previous owner had done some hambone stuff trying to restore it, but what I got for the price was ok. They were not too difficult to speak to or deal with. They do have to make some profit on what they sell or they'll not be there at all.

For serial number 5 I guess the price is not too dear, the way things go for collectors.

They sold a bunch of similar vintage/type Hammarlund receivers at pretty rock bottom prices not too long ago. So, it's gotta be the serial number pushing this price up.

As always, YMMV.

The cabinet has serial number 5 with the type entry defaced to be unreadable.  Wonder why?
The serial 5 if on the rear of the chassis would be for a SP-10 which looks not at all like the radio shown.
No picture of the rear of the radio which would show the serial number.
The power supply is for a military rack mounted receiver.
Looks like the normal, I think, it appears to be, word play scam that you see not only on ebay but on car lots and at hamfests.
Buyer beware.
I would buy it for the spare parts for the SP-100 and two SP-200's that I have but it is worth about what the shipping would be.
It is a later SP-200 with the potted transformers.
Be interesting to see what the serial number is.

As long as everyone's happy. Looks that way here. I think it's great.

Sometimes there is a reason, we may not see it, why a particular person pays a price for something.

I've sold low SN's, some #1 and #0, of far rarer things in much better shape and didn;'t get much..
Today the commonest-seeming thing brought me much more.

It is hardly a trap of flowery and clever words if the interested parties can ask the seller a question, ask or more pics, etc.

I never use clever words. It takes too long to weave tales. Just use plain facts. If I earn less that's OK. the buyer always pays a fair price.

Please say it is not true??

Did YOU sell a key for a PDP-8 for that money???
Huh?
Why? Why would what is a standard key that does not fit anything be desirable??
Was there a machine attached to it??

Timtron, we carbon date the meece turdlettes, that's how we establish "provenance".
Thought you know this stuff...  ;)

It does fit something. The 8e machines are going for $4-7K CPU only. Can't price the older more valuable 8i, as none are for sale right now. That key is from the 1960's and one of the very oldest keys. It is valued by computer collectors just like some rare ancient audio part would be to an audio hobbyist.

But wait there's more...the buyer could also get some parts from the same seller for the restoration: 10, count 'em 10, NIB .02 mfd 600v greenie caps for $129!

Steve, my first thought when I read your head line "Absolutely Unbelievable"
that you came up with a new FET rig using one FET and running 2 KW output without breaking a sweat!

Maybe you can do it with two fets soon?
