Title: More of the Same (Winter Never Ends, etc etc) Post by: Todd, KA1KAQ on March 08, 2014, 03:17:52 PM Temps in the high 60s right now, pushing 70. A beautiful, sunny day.
Not so yesterday. Last week was another below-normal week with temps 10-20 degrees colder. Thursday night brought sleet and rain which continued off and on through Friday. Granted, not a lot of ice for up north, but it's amazing there weren't a lot of outages down here. We lost one limb off a hemlock tree(currently not used for aerials) and got a lot of water. The big tree holding the 80m dipole already has a bend due to the tension from the aerial and counterweight system. The ice really had it bowing, thought it might come down. But today - all is well. Back to 'normal', at least for a few days. In the meantime, a few more pics of an icy dipole and support tree. Because you just can't get enough pictures of icy dipoles and trees, right? Yep, we're ready for spring. Title: Re: More of the Same (Winter Never Ends, etc etc) Post by: Todd, KA1KAQ on March 08, 2014, 03:19:59 PM And the aftermath.
Check out my redneck counterweight. :D Title: Re: More of the Same (Winter Never Ends, etc etc) Post by: John K5PRO on March 09, 2014, 04:45:39 AM Today it was in the 50s at home, and sunny. I drove up on the mountains to the east, up at 11,000 feet. There was a snowstorm all day, 28 deg, winter in full form. 30 minutes away!

I think we have to go through some roller coaster weather to get to Spring...We did Spring ahead with our clocks ,,,,right? Yesterday it was 68. I feel like a yo-yo.
Title: Re: More of the Same (Winter Never Ends, etc etc) Post by: Todd, KA1KAQ on March 09, 2014, 03:13:36 PM That's the thing, the yo-yo effect. Though it's been another colder-than-normal winter here, it's not the temps so much as the up and down crap. Makes it difficult to plan much beyond indoor activities, especially with a cold rain thrown in. AMfone - Dedicated to Amplitude Modulation on the Amateur Radio Bands
At least this time I got up early enough and got things rolling before the condensation got bad. Could see just a little started on the transmitter viewing glass windows. Opened the doors to the garage, fired up most of the gear and let it all warm up. Worked just fine. Today it was in the 50s at home, and sunny. I drove up on the mountains to the east, up at 11,000 feet. There was a snowstorm all day, 28 deg, winter in full form. 30 minutes away! Reminds me of back home, though not that extreme. I lived about 20 miles south of my parents' place and was considered in the Banana Belt due to the differences on any given day. At least this week the coldest day is only supposed to be 45 or so. We'll see! |
