Post by: Pete, WA2CWA on December 09, 2013, 10:49:52 PM
From the ARRL web site dated 12/9/13:
On December 6, Radio Arcala (OH8X) reported that its 330 foot tall tower near the village of Arkala that supported 160 meter and 80 meter Yagis literally fell victim to high winds.

...Thus proving the axiom "If it didn't fall down the antenna wasn't big enough". :)

That bottom section looks like 8 X 8 square tubing on the chords with 6 X 6 square tube on the lacings.......I've not seen a guyed tower built that strong...I never got to work those antennas...I can only guess at how much they weighed...what a shame they came down...

Not The News:

"Rumor has it they have thrown in the towel and are going to lease the Duga 3 (ex-Woodpecker) antenna and remote everything to Chernobyl, Ukraine!"  :)

ya that woodpecker antenna still stands to this day. The Ruskies know how to build things.
The Arcala project was awesome to have real antennas that high on 160 and 80 WOW
