Title: Shuttle cockpit pix
Post by: K6JEK on December 01, 2012, 12:22:26 AM
My brother-in-law sent me these, last photos of the shuttle cockpit powered up. He was head of QA for the tiles (not the glue!). He also got to work on the Hubble space telescope. Very cool, I think, very cool. I used to have one of those tiles until someone stole it from my office:

Here is one final picture of the cockpit with everything powered on for one last picture before the electronics and secret stuff were pulled out/removed.   Additionally, the last commander ordered erased all the flight deck graffiti signed by all the crews over 25 missions.

Several photos display all the graffiti within the Shuttle

It makes me wonder what we would design today, still all those switches and indicator lights or would the screens grow until everything was operated by menus and mouse clicks.

In an aircraft you don't always have time to scroll the menu to look for the item you want...Sometimes you need to throw that switch NOW and it needs to be available...

As any computer super hero will tell you, point and click is for dummies.  ;D

Great photos. I wonder if they were taken with a point and shoot camera? ;)

Looking at these pics I can't help but think how fantastic the human mind is to have created something as complex as that.  Imagine where we started 110 years ago at Kitty Hawk using sticks and fabric.

And just think of how barbaric and antiquated these pics will look 110 years from now.  Future astronauts will laugh, but will still be amazed at how we pulled it off so quickly using what we had available at the time.

Similar with submarines. Compare the VA class (touch screen) with the Ohio class ship control stations.

Fantastic picture Jon.  I can just imaging thinking, "what switch to throw next"!

So if they took all the stuff out, what was put in its place for the museum show?  Wonder why the graffiti was erased since its part of the journey from the various crews?
