"they" whomever it might be this week, have already a proposed solution to rid the internet of true "anarchy" - that is, personal hacking, malbots, viruses, zombie PCs, etc.

The basic idea is to require every computer than connects to the 'internet' to be certified, meaning that "they" will have a positive ID on it and who owns it and who is responsible for it, and if it has AV and other protective ware on it, and if it is infected, etc.. If the box fails, it will get sandboxed down to the tools necessary to comply.

Don't mock the concept. Only recently the naming authority create a rule that for DNS, a webserver that is using a domain name must be linked to a real identification of a person or corporation and have a real contact. The only penalty is not routing the DNS, but that is enough to bring most in line.

That was to stop DNS spoofing, etc. Requiring some ID on a domain is a far cry from  taking control of one's personal computer. It's comparing infrastructure to the end user. They just aren't the same.

Maybe it'll kill the internet all together and we can all get back to basics. We'll all have to switch from the internet to the aethernet. Wouldn't that be something?

I agree, but it was a step in the general direction of increased scrutiny or control. Such things happen little by little, slowly over time, sometimes generations.

Too much control goes way beyond reducing anarchy and sucks the fun out of even the most mundane activities, and I think there really are people, somewhere, in charge of finding out what is fun and where the 'slack' is, and putting a stop to it or making it cost money, or even adding annoyances to it like the little 'emoticon ads' at the bottom of cheap e-mails. These folks turn screws.

But for the topic, if the internet was restricted/removed, I'll roll right over that pothole and keep on trucking. Work would be different. The cats would get a little more attention after supper. I'd miss these little chit chats for a while and I'd learn to solve more problems by myself. The books would begin to wear out faster and there would be more spiral or otherwise paper notebooks. Maybe more books would be written that were worth reading.

Maybe people are bored with the truly good things in life. Ain't enough stimulation for 'em. Pity them if they have to pick up a book, say hello to their siblings or parents, and horror of horrors, discuss the day's events at he family's evening meal.

I'm not saying that your are wrong about people trying to exert more control. However, more security it is not necessarily more control. Is anyone controlling you if you put a lock on the door of your house? I'd say no. If you are forced to buy a lock and register it, then there is some control. We'll see which way it goes vis-a-vis the Internet. Personally, I'm more concerned about the tax man entering into the Internet scene. That will be more control that this other stuff. Sure, security is important. To the tax man, money is far more important.
