Title: Motivation of W1VTP
Post by: WU2D on November 05, 2011, 07:40:40 PM
I have been tricked into restoring a Bendix TA-12 by Al. He said that he came into one from his Elmer's estate and wouldn't it be nice to put two of them on the air. So I got Brown W1VZR to dig one out for me from his stash and bring it up to Nearfest. He did and shortly after Al brought his unit over. We compared units and plans and I started working on the unit. I cleaned it up, reversed a bunch of mods and actually cobbed a couple of power supplies onto it and got it on the air on CW. Then I started building the power supply modulator unit. At this point Al had not even reached under the kitchen sink to grab the Windex! Al, this procrastination must stop.

The unit has such a big keying relay that it shakes on its shockmount when keyed so I named it Shakira after the Colombian entertainer who is known to also shake her hardware.

So I have been sending Al Shakira videos to try and start his engine. He is not responding.

If Al doesn't respond to that, we need to move him to the 'late notables' category ;)

His response is probably evident on another channel.

Of course he is pleasant sounding on the Flex, but that is not the real him. That is a computer generated simulated estimation of Al. You should hear him on a carbon microphone and an 807 rig. Totally different deal.

By the way Al the Power supply Modulator is getting close to being flipped over for wiring. Good thing I have a work trip to Dayton this week. That will give you a chance to catch up.

Is the carbon mic in series between the PA and the antenna?  :D

Are we talking Dr. Jekyll; Mr. Hyde?  Werewolf? ;D

OK Al,

I finished wiring the Power supply section and made the cable and I can report - no smoke and it works in CW mode. My power supply is providing 550VDC at full loading for 60 Watts out. The set seems happy at this voltage but I would suspect that you could run higher without problems. Next weekend perhaps over Thanksgiving break I will start working on the Modulator section.

So the PSU does 550VDC, -70 VDC and 28VDC for the Fils and Relay and finally 6.3VAC and -32VDC bias for the modulator tubes and 300VDC for the modulator lower stages.

So it is sort of a mini-Ranger type of class.

Great looking TX.  Good luck on finishing it up and getting it on the air.
