It's time to start up the PW net.  Bruce will be taking NCS November 6 @ 3PM.  Bruce and I will be alternating at first.  The plan is to divide up NCS responsibilities so no on is tied down every Sunday.  Here's a relay from Bruce:

1) What freq is best for the ops to use?
We had started in the AM Window, but moved down the band to 3880, stay here or move to 3875?

2) What time do they want to do it on Sunday?
We had started at 3PM or so, think worked out pretty well.

Rig - QRP, defined as 807 power or less (Tnx to Carl, KC2TAU and others for suggestions here)

Mode - AM, hence the name AM QRP

Format - Roundtable, for order and to let the truly PW have a say

Vintage - New or old, home brew or commercial just fine, "run what you brung" (Tnx to KC2TAU for feedback here)

NCS - Bruce W1UJR to start, will need others for future nets, NCS should have QRO ready if needed to "guard" the freq

I would say 3875 or 3885, if you guys are on 3880 and a qro station gets on 5kc's away the buckshot will be nasty
i will probably tune in to see who i can and can't hear, guess i could run the flex down to 5 watts and check in but i won't torture you guys with my lack of roundtable skills  ;)

Got tied up replacing a thermostat in the Escort and (unsuccessfully) trying to find a replacement magneto for the frick fracking Briggs and Stratton mower engine at NAPA in town.. did the net happen?

My QRP operations today was limited to playing around a bit in the CW SS on 20 meters with the K1's 5 watts from the Volvo.  Worked a lot of stations easily, usually on 1st call, very few guys needed repeats on my PW signal.  Picked up a whole lot of sections quickly.  Would be interesting to try working a clean sweep with this setup in a concerted effort next year, would need to have 80 and 40 to pick up the local sections.

Today I got the 160m ant off the ground and lowered the 80m ant. I have a big branch across it nad hung up in a sappling. Maybe next weekend after I do front brakes on the truck. Totally dark after work now. Yard is nuked

I have a much better antenna this year and so I'll see how aggressive the ALC is on the IC-703. It won't be broadcast but....  :)

Hope to get on next weekend. 80 meter ant only at 25 feet. At least it is in the air now. Rope caught on the bark of a tree so wind should shake it loose. I needed to run the antenna sideways a bit so when the other half of the monster oak falls it won't rip the antenna down.

Better late than never, right?

Just saw this post, so here are some pix of the apparatus: breadboard Hartley oscillator, which uses an 841 triode BTW, modulator/speech amp, and outboard mod xfmr & filter (not Heising) choke. Maybe no one will see this; oh, well!.

Get yourself a 211 and make a Heising Modulator.  Bob, 2ZM did that several years back. He used an old candlestick mic and it sounded great.  Not very much of an SBE effect since I think he was limiting his modulation to around 60%.

I talked to Bob at least once when he was using that rig. It was on 160M, and I was impressed with the stability and absence of FM. Actually, mine doesn't have much of an SBE effect either, due to the high-C tank circuit. I use the 3-diode high-level negative peak limiter circuit to keep oscillations going over 100% of the modulating signal. Doesn't take much: keep-alive voltage is only 24V with B+ of ~400V. Although B+ is killed during standby, the keep-alive voltage is still there, so I also have to open up the cathode circuit so that I don't hear the oscillator in the receiver.

A 1929 AM Heising-modulated rig using "50 Watters" has been on the project list for several years (at least a decade). Have most of the parts; just need to work my way down the project list to get to it.
