Title: JT65 HF MODE
Post by: W2PFY on July 22, 2011, 01:31:30 PM
has anyone played with this mode. I just started to listen to it but it seems like it has an extremely limited text application. Looks like all you can do is exchange signal reports? What fun is that?

It is a somewhat interesting mode. Thanks for reminding me to reconfigure my computer and SDR radio for that digital mode BTW.
YUP kinda like a 'canned response' pressing F keys on the keyboard. I forget the actual software, maybe Ham Radio Deluxe, but you can go into a waterfall mode and see a scan of 10 stations conversing and 'exchanging info' It was quite interesting for me to be mesmerized until the computer kept crashing. Activity mainly on 40M and good DX....SE Asia, New Zealand, etc etc. Using 30 watts.
I would like to get back into it for Winter time.

Here's the link, you want the 1070HF software

http://sourceforge.net/projects/jt65-hf/files/ (http://sourceforge.net/projects/jt65-hf/files/)

BTY your computer clock has to be dead on to receive the signals properly.

BTW your computer clock has to be dead on to receive the signals properly.

Now there's a challenge...Most PC clocks I have dealt with suck at keeping good time on their own.   And none of them ever seem to hold sync with one another every well either as a result.

I use the US Navy tick system and it keeps the computer accurate to some some part of a second. It updates every 15 minutes but you can set it to do it more often. W1VW turned me onto it.

I can't find the damn thing. Maybe Dave will come in here and give the URL. What's more, it disappeared from my computer. Need to re boot.

Ok I found the software. It defaults to the navy server.

Another thing to remember if you manually have it update, when you finished hit the - instead of the X to close it out in order not to shut it down.

I played with it.  Spent the time getting the software to setup the time accurately, then tried it out.  7 minutes per QSO exchange of basically who (callsign) and where( QTH) with a simple report.  No ability for a real QSO.  Boring.

You are missing the whole point of the mode. It is designed for QRP or QRPP.
I run QRSS using Dual Frequency CW and also WSPR and have been copied across Europe and the USA running 100mW into an inverted V dipole on both 40M & 30M.

No sir.  I get that.  I just don't care about it.  Not my thing.  If it's yours then cool.  Enjoy.

I have tried many digital modes a few times, then I am not interested.   Many new hams seemed to be fascinated with these modes, probably because they were raised on computer communications or texting.

Just a quick question........on the JT65A.
I might have to dig from the reflectors..........I'm trying to run JT65A and connect within the (same) computer to Ham Radio Deluxe and then connect to the FLEX.
HRD does link to my FLEX but I cannot get the JT65A to link to HRD, using SAME computer. There were tricks to make these connections through 'virtual' means inside the computer.
I can run HRD and DM780 to control the FLEX but the JT65A seems like it has to run from another computer to connect to HRD.
I'm confused too............but I'll figger it out.....
I'll go with using two computers, use less grey matter and less frustration

Latest update for SMUG users of Power SDR:::::
JT65A WILL link up to Ham Radio Deluxe using Virtual Audio Cables (VAC) These are 'virtual' cables inside the computer that connect software together.
The JT65A will link to Ham Radio Deluxe, which links to the Flex radio software for control of the Flex hardware.
All of this magical stuff through the amazing computer. :o
