Title: Damned ePay!
Post by: k4kyv on June 14, 2011, 02:30:41 AM
I wanted to view an item on ePay (a friggin' ceramic insulator) and I got this message:

Unfortunately, access to this particular item has been blocked due to legal restrictions in some countries. We are blocking your viewing in an effort to prevent restricted items from being displayed. Regrettably, in some cases, we may prevent users from accessing items that are not within the scope of said restrictions because of limitations of existing technology. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause, and we hope you may find other items of interest on eBay.

I was able to bring up the page by switching user and opening  it under my wife's profile, same computer, and it came through OK. This happens with the old computer; I assumed it was due to some mystery setting I inadvertently made under my user profile in that machine.  But this time, I used the laptop, and same thing. I haven't changed a lot of the default settings in the laptop. For some reason, ePay has me on a blacklist for anything related to military surplus.  I once tried to contact them to enquire about this, but never could get a reply.

I can't figure it out. Isn't it the same IP address regardless of which user profile in logged on? How do they identify me as the user?

Maybe your username is the flag.

I use my ham call as username, so maybe that's it. It would probably get me blacklisted a few other places as well.

That is a mystery Don. Problem is as you know it's imposable to get help but there is a phone number embedded in the system somewhere so you can call them. I think it would be easier to find them in the yellow pages. I think their QTH is San Jose, CA.

I have heard of people calling them and getting things fixed.

Go to this page and call them.

Might be easier to set up a different usename/password.
Maybe they think you're a member of the Korean Youth Volunteers

Dvorak keyboard? French settings? any non-US-standard settings?

Dvorak keyboard? French settings? any non-US-standard settings?

Enabled the Dvorak keyboard, US International keyboard and French Language spell checker - stock features already pre-installed in the computer when I bought it.  Is that supposed to make me a terrorist or something?

I very rarely bid on anything on ePay anyway, so it's a moot point.  I'll just use my wife's user profile if need be (she can toggle on those enabled features under her profile, too, so I doubt that has anything to do with it). But it still irritates the hell out of me.

Your user agent is probably indicating your encoding is French, and therefore eBay is presuming you are in France even though your eBay profile says US.  Try a US-based proxy server to see if that's the problem.

There used to be a little program that would make your PC pretend to be whatever you typed into the fields, regardless of what browser, os, or anything else it really was. Handy.

Even more bizarre, it didn't block access to the    Navy Antenna Coupler CU-168, but wouldn't let me view a simple US Signal Corps ceramic antenna stand-off insulator!
