Post by: k4kyv on June 29, 2010, 05:26:54 PM
Just when you thought that Morse Code was dead.  The Russian spies, recently arrested in the US, are keeping the The Code  alive.

One of the DOJ complaints says this:

2. RADIOGRAMS

27. Radiograms are coded bursts of data sent by a radio transmitter that can be picked up by a radio receiver that has been set to the proper frequency. As transmitted, radiograms generally sound like the transmission of Morse code. As is set forth below, the Illegals have comminicated with Moscow Center by means of radiograms.

code burst. my military buddies tell me how they would send a burst of code. it would be high speed and over quick so the enemy could not triangulate the TX. Even so, the TX was put a few hundred yards away and the whole thing controlled remotely.

I think it's Great.. ;D I am in the process of setting up Practice sessions on 10 meter with some newly picked up junk. My idea is to id as a beacon state the purpose an then send out in differing sets of letters and punctuation an numbers for practice purposes. Stand down every ten minutes ID and start  over again.

I think it would be neat. an on ten there's scads of room. ;D I wouldn't be bothering anyone more or less and and !!!! always check the frequency before transmission.

That 353 soviet spy radio is very cool....I like the little flip-out key on the front panel.....able to operate from any mains voltage or batteries

This explains a lot about those mysterious numbers stations that have persisted even post Cold War. What is amazing is that after all these decades no-one has "leaked" any concrete information about them. It is highly unlikely that the Russians are the only ones still engaging in this kind of cloak-and-dagger work, complete with spy radios and invisible ink.

The FBI also alleges that the couple received encoded radio messages in their home from a Russian connection. The complaint also contends that during the 2007 meeting, Lazaro passed messages to his Russian contact written in invisible ink.
Alleged Russian agent was dramatic TV reporter in Peru (http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/06/29/russian.spies.pelaez.profile/index.html?eref=rss_topstories&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+rss%2Fcnn_topstories+%28RSS%3A+Top+Stories%29)

I was just listening to a numbers station this morning at about 0700z on +/- 5.85 Mhz...a female voice speaking 5-number groups of Spanish numbers. In central Wisconsin, the AM signal was 20 over S-9 on a Hallicrafters SX-122A.

The Castro regime in Cuba is also in the pro-Code spy camp.

Gwendolyn and Kendall Myers would go on to plead guilty in the case. He's serving life without parole as part of a deal that could free his wife in a shorter amount of time.

Their sailboat, pictured below, was destined for government auction to satisfy court forfeiture.  It was moored just south of us, at Galesville, Maryland.

Some on Madison Avenue still have an affinity for the morris-code ( ;D ) as well. A particular financial group has been running TV ads recently using ... --- ... across the screen in unison with a CW audio track, to signify the drastic state of our economy.

Apparently a few out there still remember what CW is, and assume the general public does as well.
