Title: Batten down the hatches Post by: W2ZE on February 24, 2010, 01:48:48 PM Looks like a monster storm for New England and Upstate NY for Thursday and Friday. All the doom and gloomer's predicting that this one will make the DC blizzard(s) look like a snow flurry.

In Vancouver (http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2010/02/100212-vancouver-2010-warmest-winter-olympics/). Title: Re: Batten down the hatches Post by: KF1Z on February 24, 2010, 05:36:24 PM We got our first storm of the season here (of any consequence).
Woke up to 13" of new snow, snowed all day, still is... another foot I'd guess. The "big" storm that was forecast for Thurs into Friday petered out... Now supposed to just get another 6" or so from now 'til friday. Rain thursday night... But windy for the next 3 days... gusts of up to 55mph... yippee.. Power has been off more than on since last night.... flickering all the time it is on.. Yesterday we were looking at nearly 50% bare ground..... I guess it's winter in central verminmont now! ;D Title: Re: Batten down the hatches Post by: Ed/KB1HYS on February 24, 2010, 06:08:43 PM Initial Snow has turned to rain. The 4inches or so has become a heavy slush or melted away. West of here is getting nearly a foot though.
Title: Re: Batten down the hatches Post by: WA1GFZ on February 24, 2010, 08:40:08 PM we had 3/4 inch of slush....only because the snow blower is running great
Title: Re: Batten down the hatches Post by: N3DRB The Derb on February 26, 2010, 05:16:40 AM I'm getting hammered by 50~60 mph winds here. I went out and loosened up on my ropes a bit this afternoon, I just hope I loosened them enough. I should have just slacked em down all the way. Guess I'll know when the sun comes up if it's still in the trees. :P
Title: Re: Batten down the hatches Post by: WD8BIL on February 26, 2010, 07:40:43 AM We had 6" in 3 hours last evening. I got the stuff plowed by 10PM.
Got up at 3AM and plowed another 12". With all the snow piled up on the sides of the driveway from previous plowing and these 40MPH winds the driveway fills up with drifting snow. The last 100 ft of the drive gave the truck's bottom a good scrubbing!!! Title: Re: Batten down the hatches Post by: Ed/KB1HYS on February 26, 2010, 07:50:52 AM Wicked winds have wrecked most of New Hampshire.
300000 folks with no power. I got power at home, but not at work. Looks like I'll be spending the day picking up the tree limbs. It was warm overnight so no snow or ice, just brutal wind. Supposed to get snow tonight though which should make the repair/recovery a joy. I feel bad the line crews, lot's of mandatory OT in the next few days. Title: Re: Batten down the hatches Post by: Todd, KA1KAQ on February 26, 2010, 10:22:27 AM The Vancouver/Seattle area is in a more temperate zone than the rest of North America. Nothing to do with manbearpig. Much of what we're seeing this year has to do with El Nino according to the meteorological community, though overall temps have been declining since 1995 or so. Sometime down the the road that natural cycle will reverse again, and manbearpig will return.
Even down here in NC we're getting hammered with the wrap around winds and cold air from the present low pressure and storm system. 20-40 mph gusts, makes the whole house creak at times. Sure does make the aerials swing! Coldest winter they've had since the 70s apparently, but not a surprise. Title: Re: Batten down the hatches Post by: W2ZE on February 26, 2010, 12:08:58 PM Quote Nothing to do with manbearpig. I love the South park reference! Title: Re: Batten down the hatches Post by: WA1GFZ on February 26, 2010, 05:00:02 PM again we got nothing. There was a dusting this morning but it melted.
Title: Re: Batten down the hatches Post by: W1RKW on February 26, 2010, 05:07:40 PM snowing here. picked up about 4 or so inches. The good thing is most is not sticking on the roadways. Shaded areas seem to be collecting most of it.
Found a new way to clear the driveway with semi-slushy snow. I forgot I had a floor squee-gee for the garage. Used it on the driveway. Works pretty good for clearing that wet or semi-slushy snow. It even scrapes hard pack pretty good too. Title: Re: Batten down the hatches Post by: Pete, WA2CWA on February 26, 2010, 05:12:10 PM We got roughly about 12 to 14 inches but there was lots of wind-blown snow throughout last night. Still off and on snow shower bursts this afternoon and into tomorrow.
Title: Re: Batten down the hatches Post by: KF1Z on February 26, 2010, 06:01:56 PM We got about 25 inches Tuesday night, and through Wednesday...
Wednesday night it turned to rain, and rain all day thursday and part of the night, then it got windy. Guess we got about 3" of rain on top of the snow... What a mess. Were without comm power Thursday from early AM to 4 pm. Then from this morning at 1am to 4pm... The only real storm of the season,.... Title: Re: Batten down the hatches Post by: Ken - K2UPI on February 26, 2010, 06:56:20 PM The snow caught up with us north of Syracuse this time. Got up to find 18 in. of pure snow in the driveway.
Not the nice fluffy lake effect stuff but that heavy, wet, gloppy Atlantic crap. Gave the snowblower and the OM a good work out. At least the sun was out by mid day and the temps were 40+...didn't lose power and the antennas stayed up. Gotta be thankful about something.... :D Ken/K2UPI Title: Re: Batten down the hatches Post by: Jim, W5JO on February 26, 2010, 07:07:30 PM Those of you who are East and Northeast of the South of Oklahoma, get ready for another. We had about 1/2 inch this morning and the storm is headed your direction. Another is due here Sunday night. Boy where is Al Gore when you want him to testify?
Title: Re: Batten down the hatches Post by: N3DRB The Derb on February 26, 2010, 11:37:31 PM my antenna did stay up this time. :D
Title: Re: Batten down the hatches Post by: Opcom on February 27, 2010, 12:12:13 AM you guys are getting all the snow, it just aint fair.. The phones in our Lexington MA office were out for a while.

Still coming down this afternoon! Our third snow of the season, hopefully the last. Title: Re: Batten down the hatches Post by: flintstone mop on March 02, 2010, 03:24:30 PM an el nino caused all this???
Fred Title: Re: Batten down the hatches Post by: WU2D on March 02, 2010, 07:40:43 PM Idb,
I am about a half hour north of Nashua. We got power back but let me tell you we had over 300,000 without power here in NH. That was a violent storm and it again shows how stupid we are with our above ground utilities and big trees (that we make into poles that we put right next to the big trees) here in the states. We had some visitors over from Germany and they could not believe what they were seeing. "Why do you have all of those wires?" was the general comment. Title: Re: Batten down the hatches Post by: W3RSW on March 03, 2010, 12:00:18 PM Quote We had some visitors over from Germany and they could not believe what they were seeing. "Why do you have all of those wires?" was the general comment. Very smug for Marshall Plan receipients. They could've been a suburb of Moscow. I understand most all of Europe has had a nasty winter storm lately. Almost of hurricane strength. People died. Oh, and the standard trick for Germans visiting is to take a slice of our white pappy bread, roll it up into a 1/2 inch ball and comment on the food value compared to German black bread, some of which comes in cans. Very dense and I suppose nutritious. But then again such good bread was fed to only the uberrace in a certain, not so long ago part of dark German history... ... and that was cut with sawdust unless you were in the army on the Russian front. It all depends on your point of view. One more thought. I had a German exchange student when in highschool. He ate apples from the bottom up. -nothing left but the stem. He'd look proud when finished. I asked him, " did you know the seeds contained arsnic?" ...might explain some things. ;D Title: Re: Batten down the hatches Post by: K5WLF on March 03, 2010, 02:55:14 PM Idb, I am about a half hour north of Nashua. If you haven't seen it already, there's a great documentary on PBS "NOVA" series on Pluto. The director of the NYC plantetarium tours the country explaining the demotion of Pluto. Very informative, funny and thought provoking. Suffice to say the topic's still somewhat unsettled. Title: Re: Batten down the hatches Post by: K5WLF on March 03, 2010, 09:09:06 PM Great job you have Mike. If you haven't seen it already, there's a great documentary on PBS "NOVA" series on Pluto. The director of the NYC plantetarium tours the country explaining the demotion of Pluto. Very informative, funny and thought provoking. Suffice to say the topic's still somewhat unsettled. There's still quite a flap amongst astronomers and planetarians about the Pluto thing. There was an interview with Clyde Tombaugh's widow -- Clyde discovered Pluto in 1930 at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff AZ -- wherein she said she thought Clyde would agree with the demotion of Pluto since it showed that science always progresses. Neil deG Tyson is highly opinionated about the subject and, I've heard, is quite eloquent on the PBS show. I haven't seen it yet, since I had my DirecTV yanked out by the wires about five years ago. (Too much of a time sink) I'll probably order the DVD and watch it. Neil's always good when he's in full voice. Some folks think that Pluto should never have been classified as a planet, others stand firm that it is and always will be (damn the IAU and their silly vote) and some say science progresses and we need to re-classify things from time to time as we learn more about the universe. I just tell the folks that come to my planetarium all the positions and let them make their own decision. My customers (about 18,000/year) are mostly grade school kids and love hearing that scientists actually argue about things. It helps humanize science and makes it, I believe, seem more accessible as a profession for the kids. 73, ldb K5WLF Title: Re: Batten down the hatches Post by: Bill, KD0HG on March 03, 2010, 09:23:50 PM There are some federal job openings down in New Mexico, working on the SETI radio telescope array. Out in the middle of nowhere.
The XYL wants me to apply.. Title: Re: Batten down the hatches Post by: WU2D on March 03, 2010, 10:16:40 PM Yes I know Sky Skan and I had one of their cool posters in my office back in the 90's. A woman that I worked with's husband was an engineer there. The design work that they do making planetarium systems is very advanced. http://www.skyskan.com/ AMfone - Dedicated to Amplitude Modulation on the Amateur Radio Bands
