Way back in 1967 Tim, A new WA1HLR who just upgraded from WN1HLR came to visit GMS radio.  He handed me this QSL card which I thought I would post.  Some of you may get a kick out of it.  I was 15 years old at the time.  Tim then explained to me how we were related which I never knew.  Oh yes, thats another story!!

Wow, that is an old one - back when 3868 was a fairly regular AM freq.

Ya know, at a Sothebys auction, a rare Tron QSL card like that might pull in enough cash to buy  _________________   (fill in the blank)

to really pull in cash it must have a stamp on it meaning Tim invested in mailing it.
And the post office could read the address.

Ah, yes, the HAMilton QTH, where the "slinging" transformers dangled from the trees.    :o (Old transformers used as "slinging" weights to raise antennas)  The "Tron" got on the air in HAMilton shortly after "Bob from Beverly" left the area...   ::)

Yes, 3.868 was the NAAM frequency.  National Association of Amplitude Modulation.  That was my first xtal to purchase after I upgraded before getting an HG-10 VFO.  I tried to grind my 3.739 xtal up to 3.868 but it crapped out around 3.820...I was very bummed out!  So off an order went to World Radio Labs for a 3.868 xtal...I think I still have that xtal around here somewhere. 
Tim, HLR has changed very little over the years!!  I took out a big insurance policy on that card!

Well my other xtal was on 3.724.  I am surprised we did not work each other.  I had a 6V6 xtal osc rig on for a short time and then upgraded to a DX-60A.  I only had 2 xtals.  You called CQ and then tuned the entire 3.7 to 3.75 looking for an answer.  Oh, I also used a GR-64 rcvr!  That receiver and the Knight Star Roamers were pretty popular.  $39.95 for the GR-64 back then.
Its fun going through those early QSL cards.

Yep, those were the days.

I was on 3716 and 3744 for 6 months in 1964/65 - the only two crystals I could afford in the display case at Hatry's, the ham store in Htfd.

Later when I got more BA's, with my Ranger I moved the  knob from X1 to VFO.  After a while my Novice buddies started axing me,  "Where did you get so many crystals?"  ;D

I'll have to find my old log and check now. I didn't need to tune much. The GR 64 was wide and I could hear a note well up near 20 KHz back then. I used to operate after school or early evening depending on TVI reports from the family.

Well its nice coming from an era when things were simple. I think we all have come a long way and it makes you appreciate what we have now.   
I would come home from school and throw my books under my bed and get right on the air.  My Mom would say "I guess you don't have any home work since I don't see any books"!  Well when she went to parent - teacher conference she found out the real story!

Home from skool at 3:15. Had to be at work at Essex Pharmacy at 4:00. 35 minutes of pure bliss on 15 metros when it was open in 68.

3 xtals, an Adventurer and a KT-320 to a dipole. Life was good.

Then there was the Twoer to a home brew beam. Coax wasn't long enough so I soldered and scotch taped the connection.

I worried less about the details and had more fun. There is a message in there somewhere
