I use Opera, but sometimes I HAVE to use IE products. (Like for some online courses).  HOWEVER.
Micro$uck has hijacked my IE ver 6 to always go to thier site advertizing an "Upgrade" to IE8 which I DON"T want to do, after all it's my computer Damn IT!

I have tried everything I know to get this to stop but can't.

Any help?

I have automatic updates set to alert me to available downloads.  I have to click to actually download them.  I can clear the X out of the little box for that download and then I don't get any more alerts for that particular update.

I used to have it set to automatically download updates and I would click the icon to install.  But M$ got sneaky and started to automatically install downloaded updates that I didn't want, without my permission.

IF YOU fall in the M$ pit for IE whatever....................do not remove it from your system. (Add-Remove programs from the control panel.) It will crash your Windows XP and you will have to go through a couple of hours of "REPAIR"!!!!!!!

Just my two cents worth. IE8 is fine. They had an 8 Beta out for awhile when I tried it. It had a few problems and I needed to let a guy from the HOME PLANET take total control over my computer to fix it. In the end they didn't do a lot of fixing but just removed the 8 beta and went back to the older browser and now all is well here in the land of gold plated streets. That BING feature is nice as well.

Also, depending on your habits, some websites are no longer IE6&7 compatible.

I'm currently using IE8.  Only problem I have run into is about once a day it will not open and comes up 'not responding'.  It is the only program that I have problems with.  Running XP Pro on an old Panasonic CF-51 Toughbook.

Hi Mitch, does that problem occur from the desktop icon or shortcut when you are using IE?

Try opening it up from the start menu and go to all programs and see how it does from there. If it's fine there, delete the desktop shortcut and replace it from the start menu all programs IE shortcut by right clicking on it and select send shortcut to desktop.

I have had problems with corrupt desktop icons.

Not sure what you mean by "not compatible."

I use IE7 and have no problems at all.... with you tube, or any other aspect of browsing any sites.

Have a fairly old version of IE 7... have had no prompts to upgrade....

I use Idiot Explorer 6 here, because stupid Mozilla is also utter crapware...  it is old, and came with the Xtra Poop OS on this larftop machine... Facebook is saying that they will not "support" it, so then I will not support Facebook...

YEAH I REALLY REALLY NEED THOSE SNAPPY NEW "FEATURES" - I JuST CANT LiVE WiTHOUT THEM!!!

But I think if you turn off "automatic updates" it will maybe stop dunning you for the "upgrade".

The latest Mozilla is linked at the hips and shoulders with the overseers at Google, they blocked my website for 90 days for almost zero cause... screw 'em.

If there is some other browser that is not glitchy, doesn't screw up, and is stable I'd like to find it...

I only use IE-6 for sites that opera doesn't work on, there's only been one site I HAD to use it for and that was a universitys online course app. It would not function with any browser but IE. Didn't care about the old version at all.

Opera is Ok-Fine for almost any webpage I've visited. Once in a blue moon some images do not show up correctly (or at all) but no big deal for me.

I have tried editing registry entries, as well as the desktop shortcut. There has to be some property or registry entry that I didn't see that would cause a redirect to the M$ site. 

I do not upgrade with M$ as they have a bad habit of adding spyware that reports the software & status of your system.  Besides privacy, I don't need programs that "run home to Mama" and hog up bandwidth, not to mention the processor utilization. (AOL is horrible about resource use and not releasing, but don't get me started on them).

IE 6 has been considered by some experts as prone to security problems, more so than 7.  That said, my experience with version 8 is that it crashed hopelessly after it was installed (unknown to me during a security upgrade) - that was on two different computers of mine until I finally caught on to M$ sneaky push policy.  I uninstalled it and was restored to version 7 which runs fairly well. 

I still prefer FireFox over IE, but there are some sites that work better with IE than FF.

I can provide the commentary re IE 6 if anyone should be interested.  My company still uses version 6, can't imagine why.

OK - I know you all didn't ask for this but here's a quote from Susan Bradley - a noted Windows expert regarding IE 6:

"...If you're still running IE 6, you should upgrade to IE 7 immediately. If your company uses a line-of-business app that requires IE 6, isolate that machine from the Internet and use it only until that app is upgraded...."

I am using IE 8 with all the updates and the only trouble I ever have is here when I enter a certain amount of text.  Then the text falls below the line and jumps up and down.  Other BB sites do not do that.

No other site gives me trouble nor have I ever had a security or virius problem using Windows Defender, Firewall and Kaspersky anti virus  This machine has Vista and I have two others with XP.  One is an original version of XP that has been auto updated and the other is XP with SP 3 updated.  That means both are as late XP as possible with IE 8 that is out there.

Why do so many have trouble with Windows is beyond me.  It is good that MS has competition.  It does keep them honest to a some level.

I think you'd find that most people that complain the loudest would have trouble with ANY machine or OS.....
As soon as a little 'problem' rears up..........."Must be the big-guy's fault!"

That said, it's FUN to complain about a company that grew as fast as MicroSoft, and made it's founders beyond filthy rich!     ;D

Especially about a group of people who were cast as ner-do-wells that would be living on mother's and dad's money throughout their life.  I don't remember who said that the we would be living below the line established by their parents.   :o

Even the second place companies do very well.  More power to them no matter where they are in line.  Just the word processor alone is nearly worth what I have spent on computers in the last decade.  The Internet and whatever associated browser is just gravy even if it locks up from time to time.

I don't know what the big deal is. I've had 8 for a while now without any issues.

The Big Deal is that this is MY computer, and I really dislike some Big Brother Corporation hacking into MY PERSONAL PROPERTY and changing things.

As far as the security issues with IE6, 1st, firewall, 2nd, custom hosts file, third, since it's getting so old, and we only use it for certain sites I think the risk is rather low. After all how many hackers are writing viri for windows 98 or other Obsolecent programs.

Careful!  A non-connected computer can be infected with a floppy used in the connected computer that has a boot sector virus.  I think a USB stick can do the same thing - but am not sure about that 'tho.

I have a windows laptop running vista, a mac running somthing and a Linux machine running Suse 9.   I like the windows machine because it has nice graphics on the case.  . .don't that just zap your p-ram? 

I use firefox as my web browser. I hate IE it's got more bugs than a picnic in a swamp.

I use Mozilla here as well and try to avoid IE unless absolutely necessary but otherwise no problems. Also, no 24/7 virus scanner here either. Don't like the overhead they use.  I only load them onto the system when I think I should do a scan then remove them soon afterwards.  I've only had one PC contract a virus in nearly 18 years of having a PC.  We're pretty cautious about what external stuff goes into the PC.  Also use a program called Mailwasher to scan for file attachments on incoming email from unknown sources.  Mailwasher is nice because you can delete email at the server before downloading to the local machine.  It also has a bounce feather too where one can bounce and delete an email before downloading.
