Title: The DERB is HEARD ! 7160 Mon nite
Post by: WA3VJB on May 04, 2009, 09:29:55 PM
What a pleasure -- I heard the Derb on 7160 tonight.

Joined us on the FT101 with WD8BIL, WA1HLR, KX5JT, K9ACT and W1IA around 8:45PM EDT.

I heard him better through an internet-based receiver in Albany, where I was co-monitoring with Terry W2PFY.

Quite a network

I'm surprised at my reports. Paul, U was Q5 but not strong - too close together I think.

I got the antenna to take power but it's not really happy. Looks like tomorrow I'll be able to get out of doors and play around with feed-line lengths and try to make the flashbox a happy camper. My swr on 7160 is abt 3.5 to 1 at best match.  :P

As mentioned on the air, I was listening to a receiver in the UK and heard HLR and JT almost as well as on my receiver.  I could not hear Brent from UK  but he was very loud in my receiver.  I then bumped into him in the chat box on a CT receiver.

Funny hobby this is turning into.

Yes, it is really a nice service. I cannot seem to find how much it costs to be a member or where to sign up. :'(

Global Tuners is free.  You do need to set up an account however.

Here http://www.globaltuners.com/signup.php (http://www.globaltuners.com/signup.php)

But that account is good for only two weeks?

Hmm not sure about the two week thing.  I was grandfathered in from DX Tuners.  DX Tuners went down and then when they regrouped as Global Tuners, they mentioned limiting the usership in numbers but had invited previous DX tuner users back.  I never paid anything as far as I can remember.

I just tried the Albany NY receiver and this is what I got

Tune: trial accounts can not tune this receiver at this moment.

Just move on to one that lets you tune.  Or wait for the moment to pass.

However, frequently the owner is on line and will unlock it for you.

Also, I found that if you ignore the locked for guest msg, you will find it isn't really locked.  Seems like they all say that.

I don't know where the only two weeks comes from.  That is the guest period.  Once you have been on for two weeks, you graduate to "normal" and have permanent access.

What is really needed are some volunteers to set up some more receivers across the continent.  There is now no way for me to hear myself on 160 for example under the usual condx.
