Title: CRL audio chain
Post by: w3jn on December 13, 2008, 06:26:24 PM
Have a CRL PMC450 peak modulation limiter and a CRL  SEP-800 AM stereo spectral energy processor.

Question - in what order do I hook 'em up?

I'm thinking mic amp/compressor --> SEP800 --> PMC450 --> xmitter

That's the way I would do it. The peak limiter is usually the last item in the chain before the xmtr.

Looking at the manuals, they are of different vintages and neither manual references the other piece of equipment.

That makes sense to me, Dave, tnx much!

yea John
Sounds like the right combo.
That was supposed to be the best processing chain in its day. As the manufacturer would warn.........make sure the transmitter can handle the higher modulation peaks. The CRL line was a very agressive processing system.

In general, compressors first, then limiters.

Hi John,

I have the exact same units...and a few more.

The original line up for the vintage of PMC-450 was as follows

AGC400 or 800 for stereo AGC
SEC-400 or 800 for stereo 4 band comp/limiter
PMC-450 final peak limiter/clipper

I nice sounding air chain. That PMC-450 is what you need to protect the TX from overmod. The SEP-800 is from the late 80's and is a nice 4 band EQ/limiter. Try to put a slow AGC in front of the whole chain like a Volumax or AGC-400 or any general to make it complete.

Have fun.

Paul

TNX, guys.  I have a Nady mic/parametric eq/comp all-in-one unit (like a Symmetrix 528e) as teh first thing in the chain.  Indeed the CRL manuals caution that there be a compressor downstream.

That's how it works for me John.

JN,
Is that the NADY TMP-3?
If so, how do you like it?  It's seems like a reasonably priced unit
with many features .

That's the one, Jim.  I like it OK, no problems so far.  I bought it on eBay some time ago for around $50 and just got around to hooking it up at the lake QTH where it's feeding a Gates Solid Statesman comp/limiter which in turn feeds a modified Valiant.
