Title: HQ-170 parts, where to find them
Post by: WV9R on November 16, 2008, 01:16:54 AM
Hello everyone and thanks for all the help from my last post..I did find the problem with my HQ-170, someone had tried to align it and had cracked the iron cores in the IF cans, so ...now I need to replace the cans  :(  Does anyone have any idea where I might be able to get these, I'm afraid I need all 6 60kc cans, if anyone can help that would be greatly appreciated ...guess I'm going to work on my HQ-140 till I can locate the parts  ;D  Thanks again for all the help guys ..

Can you glue them, or are they really fractured?

Ouch!  I have never seen someone manage to crack all of the slugs so the previous owner really should be kept away from radios!

Are you able to extract the remains without damaging the forms?  If so and you are able to find new transformers you can then just replace the slugs instead of the entire transformer.  If you need all 6 transformers you are going to need to find a parts set or it might also be worthwhile to see if you can find some other low frequency slugs that fit.  It might be worth checking the size that Hallicrafters used for their ~50 Kc transformers as these parts sets are probably more available than Hammarlunds; you could also check whether the slugs from the 85 kc IF transformers used in the BC-453 would fit.  Hopefully others will have additional suggestions or parts available.

Good luck with your endeavor!
