I need to know the diameter of the tuning and volume knobs used on this radio.

That was my very first "new" table top shortwave receiver in 1963.  I still have it too.  As I recall it sold for $49.95.  I just went looking for it to find you the information you requested but it must be buried somewhere in my basement.  I will dig deeper for it later this evening or tomorrow.

It never was an impressive performer, however.  It's basically an "all American five" (with a solid state rectifier, so it only has 4 tubes) with 3 shortwave bands added to the broadcast band.  No isolation transformer, no RF stage, one IF stage at 455 kcs, and the "BFO" really just adds positive feedback to the IF amp making it break into oscillation.  I was never able to use it to receive SSB.  It looks a lot like the Hallicrafters S-120 with one added feature, an S-meter. I don't know if the HE-40 was an S-120 knockoff or if they both came out of the same Japanese factory.  I've seen a few other clones of the HE-40 marketed under other brands also.

The HE-40 was the receiver I used to "discover" 75 meter AM.  Less than 18 months later, I "graduated" to a Lafayette HA-230 which was many magnitudes better in performance.  The HA-230 was $89.95, without a speaker.

Okay, it's been almost 6 weeks since I initially replied to this post.  I had trouble locating the HE-40.  I finally found it and it was not where I remembered seeing it last.  I haven't taken a close look at it in a long time.  I took the measurements of the knobs for you.

The bandspread & tuning knobs are made by SATO (Japan) and it is part number 2650-L:  The shaft hole is 0.250".  The knob is 0.764" deep, and is tapered. The widest point (inside) = 1.331" dia, Narrowest point (outside) = 1.294"

The volume, BFO, and band selector knobs: shaft hole is 0.250", This knob is 0.813" deep and also tapered.  Widest point (inside) = 1.17" dia, narrowest point (outside) = 0.982".   There is no brand or part number on the smaller knob and only has the country of origin as Japan.
