Fair Radio has some nice heavy duty units for $2.50.
I use the same type in my strapping tuner.

I have often had to make them. If I need really strapping ones, that gives me a good excuse to fire up the lathe. I have had to make some odd ones ova the years. 1/4" on one side and 3/8" on the otha.

If you make ur own you can use some nice strapping setscrews instead of the wimpy ones that usually come in the factory made unitz.

Frank some of my units are 1/2 inch hole so these units can be drilled.
Yup plenty of room for a more strapping set screw. I think you could stake them since there is plenty of metal around the collar.
Sure a good deal for $2.50 I've paid more at  fleas just to have a good stash.

I have used white fibreglass rods sometimes available at hardware and agricultural supply stores.  One note of caution, though.  With some rods, tiny slivers of fibreglass flake off the shaft as you handle it, and sticks into the skin of the fingers.  These are too small to even see with a magnifier, but you can definitely feel a rather nasty irritation to the skin.  It might be wise to wear gloves while working with them, and to give them a coat of lacquer or varnish before installing in the equipment.

But aside from the clamps + hose method, which is good, fast and cheap...

A very fast DIY method is to buy some "coupler nuts" from the hardware store. For a 1/4" shaft get the 1/4-20 threaded type, and then drill the center out, since it is hex stock, drilling a hole for the set screw(s) is then pretty easy. The benefit of this method is that it will work ok even with hand tools or a drill press.

Obviously, if you have a lathe and or a milling machine, ignore this idea.
