The AM Forum

I have been a ham for many years and have only dabbled in AM - primarily on 10 meters with my IC-751 (which actually sounded very good when properly adjusted).  I sincerely enjoyed the difference in the "culture" between SSB and AM ops.  Anyway, I recently registered with AMfone and have spent the past few days browsing the countless posts and resources.  Let me just say I am glad I stumbled upon the site! 

I plan to get back on 10 meters AM very soon with a Hallicrafters I am restoring.  I will also be experimenting with 6 meters AM.

Just wanted to introduce myself and say hello!

Welcome to AM!! Most of us here are dyed in the wool AMers, and old gear / homebrew afficianados. But some are running modern gear as well. It doesnt matter how you get there as long as you get there!

The Lafayette  HA-460 is a nice lill  6m xcever, and somewhat cheep....  they make one in 10m flavor  (HA-410) also...   klc

Welcome to the group. :)  I'm sort of a young OT (been licensed since '78 [at age 14], and active since '82).  I dabbled briefly with AM back in '95, with a Johnson Ranger, and a Hammarlund HQ-110 (TVI drove me off that air at that time).  I'm getting a Heathkit Cheyennne, transmitter going (I'm hoping to work on the power supply tonight, when I get home from work), that I'll use with my Hallicrafters SX-96 receiver. Both will be better than my Yaesu FT-897D (which has mediocre audio at best on transmit, and a noisy receiver).  Lately I've been hanging out on 6 & 10m doing AM, when those two bands are open.  I've found AM to be a breath of fresh air in my operation on 6 & 10.  Now I'm looking for a 6m AM rig.  (Mark, I'll keep an ear open for you on 50.400).  I've belonged to the AM Forum for a little under 3 months.  I've found people in the group to be among the most helpful I've run into, in an online ham radio group.

I agree about the HA-460.

I had lots of fun in the mid-60s running the 460 and matching VFO mobile with a Squalo in Westchester County, NY.

Had an HA460 in my HS radio club through the mid and late 1970s.  6m AM was still common then and I used to check into the coffeepot net many mornings.  Fun band, fun rig.

Your call reminds me of a guy I worked with.  His name was Nick Joy and his name tag said "N. Joy."  Funny, he was a good guy too.

Well Chris, as others have said - you've fallen in with the villainous AMers! It really is a great bunch of guys overall, most helpful and quite friendly. Even more fun at hamfests, dinner, or other gatherings.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome!  I've been working on a Hallicrafters HT-40 – nothing major except for some tube replacements and a few resistors and caps.   I hope to have this on the air soon!
