Title: HEATHKIT BT1 BALUN Post by: ve6pg on March 01, 2007, 07:37:03 PM ..QUICK QUESTION:...HOW MUCH RF WILL THIS BALUN HANDLE?...CARRIER, AND PEAK, ON AM?...TIM...SK..
Title: Re: HEATHKIT BT1 BALUN Post by: Jim, W5JO on March 01, 2007, 10:04:51 PM Tim, I believe you are thinking of the BN-1. I can't find my sheet on it but believe it is good for about 250 PEP or a hundred watts radio like the DX 100.

Designed for 1:1 or 1:4 matching 75 to 300 ohms or 75 to 75 ohms Looks like about 100 watts key-down rating (http://www.qsl.net/kb7rgg/heath/products/ham/b1.jpg) Title: Re: HEATHKIT BT1 BALUN Post by: K9TR on March 02, 2007, 10:18:19 AM I have the B&W version of this, ages ago I was running the Viking 2 into what turned out to be a lower than expected impedance load and the coils heated enough to deform the plastic ribs. Still works fine, just looks a bit warped.
Air core bifilar baluns are fun to take to hamfests, nobody knows what they are anymore.. Mark K9TR Speak for your self ;D ;D I know what they are! We had a long discussion here some time ago on baluns. They can be hatefull, but sometimes necessary devices. Most 1:1 baluns tend to do squirrely things when you wander away from their charactoristic impedances. 4:1s tend to stay around 4:1 no matter what the impedance is on the balenced side. Most of those flimsy air cored ones tend to melt down on AM unless you are running pissweak low power. Build one with a large stack of ferrite and really heavy wire and you wont have any problems.
