With a very heavy heart, I have to report that my beloved Zoey passed away today early this afternoon, 6/26/16. She turned 14, March 25. The photo was taken several weeks before her 14th birthday. Zoey spent every day with me here in the office when I worked on manuals and other office-related stuff. When she was very little, she use to lay on the desk between the keyboard and the computer monitor. I will miss her very much.

I’m so sorry for your loss, Pete.
When I lay to rest my best friends, there have been a couple, I can’t help but think no truer words have ever been written than those by Lord Byron in his ‘Epitaph to a Dog’

Near this Spot
are deposited the Remains of one
who possessed Beauty without Vanity,
Strength without Insolence,
Courage without Ferocity,
and all the virtues of Man without his Vices.

This praise, which would be unmeaning Flattery
if inscribed over human Ashes,
is but a just tribute to the Memory of
Boatswain, a Dog
who was born in Newfoundland May 1803
and died at Newstead Nov. 18th, 1808

Written for his dog Boatswain but it seems to speak for every man’s best friend.
There’s a couple more verses, but this preamble is all I need.

Take comfort in the knowledge that you were the reason that Zoey had a long and happy life.  Somewhere, in the next few months, perhaps, is another four-legged soul looking for a friend like you.

So sorry to hear Zoey passed on, Pete.

This news brings a tear to my eyes as we've all been there...  Dogs take an extra special place in our lives and when they go, it may be the most painful life experience we go through. It is for me.

Yaz III will be thirteen in August and is slowing down. I bought him a doggie stroller and push him on the trails when he gets tired. Not a day goes by I don't think of the next ordeal.

They become perfect dogs after a few years and only want to please us.

Hope you consider another dog, as they need us and we need them.  It's the only thing that seems to help the pain over time.

Take care, OM.

I have always thought that the best tribute to the critter we have lost is the optimism of finding another to bring home after a while.... but not too long.  I'm more of a cat person, but they are really all the same in many ways as dogs once you get to know each other.
I like most animals better than I like most people, and it's because most animals are better people than most people.

Thoughts and prayers for you in this time, Pete. 14 years is a long time to have a friend with you then suddenly gone. We went through this with one of our cats last year.

As someone else mentioned, their longevity, or reaching and exceeding their expected lifespan, is directly related to how well they are loved and cared for.

I think the amount of loss and pain we feel is proportional to the amount of love and companionship shared. Those who care little, feel little. Those whose pets are members of the family and constant companions suffer the most with their loss. Hard for sure, but a small or, at least, understandable trade off for the years of enjoyment they bring to our lives.

I grieve for your loss Pete, I know just how you feel. I'm a cat person, but pets are pets and family members just the same, I miss them as you miss Zoey.

Very sorry to hear of your loss, Pete.  After a time of morning over your loss, do consider finding another companion dog.  I like Tom's naming  of his pooches  as their predecessor.

There is a dog out there that needs you and you will find that you need him (or her) also

RIP Zoey

I would like to sincerely thank everyone for their very nice and kind words both publicly here and privately. Zoey and I were able to spend some final moments together this morning before she was cremated at 12 noon. She is now back home and here in the office where she spent many hours with me over the last 14 years.

Niki, pictured below. is still with us and was also Zoey’s companion for roughly 12 years. The two girls ran the house and us most of the time. Both of them have brought us endless joy throughout the years.

Again, thank you all very much.
Pete
