Mr. Sluggo, named after the sluggo's in the Mr. Bill show, didn't come home for 2 days. Coming home from shopping today, she noticed a black cat dead on the side of the road half a mile from the house. She confirmed it was him;  got him off the road and buried him in the woods behind the house. I was asleep - she didn't want to tell me until he was in the ground because she didn't want me to look at him.

I'll miss him a lot. He was always partial to me in the same way that Toomie is partial to Glo. we have a lot of cats, and they are ours both - but Toomie has always been her cat and Sluggo was always my cat.

Derb,

Sorry to hear it.  I buried 18 year old CQ recently.  She wandered up as a small kitten and as soon as she got inside she started playing with a hand key.

She was a very "dog like" cat and her only bad habit was shedding profusely.

We have three cats.

One likes me best.

Another likes my wife best.

The third doesn't seem to like either of us that well -- unless it's dinner time, and then he likes anyone who comes to feed him.

My condolences on the loss of your furry friend.  We lost our black kitty Charcoal last summer, also due to a collision on the road which runs in front of our country house.  He was only a year old and one of seven "barn" cats which we have had fixed, feed, water and haul to the vet annually for innoculations.  Although he liked every human, I was Charcoal's favorite person, so I know what you mean when you mention Sluggo was "your" cat.

Derb,
I have one that looks just like him. -well, maybe a little more white, a tuxedo cat named "Arlin."..   affer Arlin Specter!   Grin

Arlin's 19 now; what's that? 95 years old? He's slowing down a little but still enjoys hunting in the back yard and woods but doesn't get in cat fights much anymore and doesn't range far from home.
RIP Mr. Sluggo

My condolences on the loss of Sluggo.
It must be an epidemic. Our radioKat named Keke just expired. I got home from a business trip last week and he greeted me as usual, pranced around the corner and had a heart attack. CPR was not successful. This cat was smart: he could open doors, growled at strangers, and attacked those of low character.
Kind of a weathervane for weirdos
It is interesting that many of the hams I talk to appreciate kats, and really are empathetic about losing one of these very interesting critters. This is a contrast to what I hear from other quarters:
It was just a dumb cat--go get another one at the animal shelter
or
we use 'em for target practice on the farm (yes I have heard that!)
Could this be a new character measuring device?
My observation is that you don't get a cat--they adopt you.

Cat's are like horses.

You don't own one.
You sign a contract with one.

-and you better abide by the terms.  Wink

Sorry to hear that Derb, we lost two cats that way in the last two years and it just rocks you hard.

My two have been going out the last couple of days in the morning as the weather warms up and I worry each day. But when I didn't let them out, they just sat in the window all day and pined away for the outside and tried to race through the door anytime anyone came in. Not much of a life that. So they go in and out. And I worry. But they are noticeably happier and more alert when they are allowed to be outside.

And I know what you mean about cats picking people. One of mine, Pokey, raised from birth, would always find me at night and lay up against me to sleep. He's my buddy and comes into the radio room and sits under my chair when I'm on the air in the evenings.

They certainly are interesting and endearing creatures.

Sorry to hear, Derb.    Sluggo had a great life with you.

It's the day we all dread. For the last billion years, every being on Earth has stood in an imaginary long line, including our best buddies, not knowing who is next to go - and then we go.  Let's celebrate our lives now.

RIP Sluggo.

Sorry to hear that man.  I had the exact same thing happen to me.  Except I found the animal. There is one thing for sure. There are more animals that need a home ready when you are.

Man, sorry to hear it Timmy.

We're not far behind. 'ol Grady (named after the character on Sanford n' Son) won't be around much longer either.
When he goes I'll be the only male in the house. But he's had a good
14 years .... so far.

I feel for ya man!

Sorry to hear about this.

Cats have an indoor life expectancy of 12 to 16 years average.  Outdoor cats have a life expectancy of 3 years or less and is based on where you live.  They are known to travel to their favorite places and this is usually within a 1/2 to 1 mile radius of home.  Our current cat crew is in the 12 year old range which means most are nearing the end of their stay. There will be no future replacements here due to the expenses of food and veterinarian expenses which continues to go up each year.  My fixed income isn't going up but the cost of vet care and food continues to climb.

I am very sorry to hear if this. He looks like a fine cat in the pictures.
I have lost "my" lame and partly blind feral orange tomcat "Buddy". He has not shown up in several weeks. I always invited him in, but he never wanted to stay, always demanding right back out after his plate. (He was always let out, even though I wanted him inside for his own good. I learned a few years ago that if he was not let out, he would become increasingly agitated by the minute, eventually making it necessary to return his freedom. It came to his happiness vs. what I wanted for myself) I greatly miss his daily greeting at the porch as I come home from work.
I hope that Mr. Sluggo rests in peace and his dream is of beautiful places fit for the enjoyment of cats.

So sorry to hear about Mr. Sluggo. Yes those feline furry creatures do get into our hearts. As I write this, my 16 year old cat Monet is on my chair with me. She is so loving, but after maybe 5 strokes on her back she will turn and leave me with a bloody stump. Here is a video of her a little younger being teased by the XYL:

Sorry to hear you lost your feline friend, Derb. We sure do get attached to our critter companions and it's very difficult to adjust to life without them.

Sorry about Mr. Sluggo Derb.

Our cats never go outside. I live right on a main road, and there are Fishercats & Coyotes out back in the woods. All Good reasons keep em safe inside.

We did have a "guest" cat.  A LARGE female wandered into the yard and just lay down and let the kids play & pet her.  My wife thought she might be pregnant. Turns out she wasn't she was just very BIG.  I came home and found her sitting on top of the refrigerator one day after the kids had let her in (not a good idea as it gave our cats jealous fits).  It was the first time I had seen her and it reminded me very much of a panther in a tree.  She was the most laid back cat I ever saw though, and was a frequent visitor for snacks and affection. Found out she belonged to some neighbors and she left with them when they moved.

How in the world could someone just leave a cat.

Some Drugies left a dog changed up with no food or water for days and days.  This dog somehow pulled the chain loose, jumped a 6ft fence and showed up in my back yard. Needless to say he is now my dog, in good health and is probably my best friend.
