W9AD, W8ER, and now K3VR and I have spent substantial amounts of time exploring how the rig behaves on AM, a specialty mode that many believe requires vintage gear to sound good. The SDR-1000 helps make that no longer true.

Here's a sound clip of Dave, W9AD, transmitting with his Flex radio from his home near Chicago, as received at my station near Annapolis on AM:

A few weeks ago, another member of the AM Community, Brian, K3VR, purchased an SDR-1000 after years of enjoyment from a variety of plate-modulated transmitters and vacuum-tube receivers. He told me it took a while to unearth the software commands and adjustments to get the SDR-1000 in order for AM, but the payoff was tremendous.

Here's a sound clip of Brian's transmitted signal from Pittsburgh, again received at my place near Annapolis:

Brian has some significant credentials to make the conclusions he has drawn as a new owner of the SDR-1000. In an email, excerpted here with his permission, he said:

In conclusion, I post for you his reception of my station on his SDR-1000.

In making this aircheck recording of how he was receiving my station, Brian said he went through quite a few software commands to properly record and then render his recording as an MP3 that he later sent to me by email, and that gave me the impression it was a bit cumbersome. Perhaps this is a matter of familiarity since indeed he and the radio are still getting acquainted.
